It might be different from country to country. In my country the liberal consensus is that if we're having a "free and honest debated on foreigners" (ie. politicians competing about who can be most racist) then people will not turn to "the far right" (i.e. wear swastikas, if you don't wear a swastika then you're just ordinary "right", not "far").
Our dear succdem minister of justice is even on the record setting that he believes lax hatespeech laws acts as a release valve, preventing "real" racism.
Famously, when you give right wing extremists what they want and compromise your own policies for their input, it deradicalizes them because their behavior is being rewarded and results in their success :what-the-hell:
How To Stop Fascism, Abridged and Correct Edition:
- Step 1: Into pit
- Step 2: Grenades
wow the thing that wants fascism isn't stopping fascism, wut the heck
Who thought this??? Did even the most blinkered liberals think this?
He's a Labour radlib who thinks of himself as an Orthodox Marxist who has "Formerly leftie, now complex" politics. Supported Corbyn but in kind of a half hearted way.
His theory begins and ends with "Stalin Bad. Leninists think Marxism is a determinist theory of everything. and, Althusser also bad." He also has serious Reddit atheist vibes.
I know who Paul Mason is, but I think he may be the only person who thought "right-populism" wasn't just proto-fascism.
"We thought right wing populism would act as a firewall against fascism"
Hey dumbshit what exactly do you think fascism is?
He's one regular column cancellation away from joining Spiked media at this point so throw a dart at word cloud full of things like 'property damage', 'wokeness', and 'making me feel old'.
Honestly surprised it isn't a stop sign on the cover
Chuds aren't exactly subtle
If you assume that social demmocracy is left wing populism and that it's what stopped communism, it only follows that the other side mirrors it. What no dialectical materialism does to a mf
My mum bought me his 'Postcapitalism' book years ago - I've never read it, and as each year passes the less inclined I am to ever read it.
She also got me another book about how 'national populism' is revolting against liberal democracy - but I've already read chapter 1 of Blackshirts and Reds so it's kinda redundant
It's wild to me how online soc dems will attack you if you so much as hint that right wing populism is fascism
But muh breaking points
Believe that right wing populism is not fascism? It has to be the term "populism." That's all I can think of, really. Because what is right wing populism? Honestly, what aspect of right wing policy is popular when it inherently benefits those with the most power (a minority)?
