"At that point, I said that whereas I had risked my life to defend my country while in the Air Force, I was not willing to risk my life to teach a class with an unmasked student during this pandemic," said the college professor.
You ever be such an asshole your professor resigns in the middle of class.
To be fair teaching a topic you enjoy is the sort of job I could see someone actually wanting to do later in life, unlike many of the shit jobs the elderly are forced into.
It’s pretty common in academia, but not out of necessity. When you’ve dedicated your entire life to teaching and researching a topic you care about and genuinely enjoy going to work every day, it makes sense to not want to give it up.
no its actualy not that a "indivvidualism" brain reflex !
, he needs to make fucking room for the next generation , even if he loved it. ...
And if he dont have someone that can replace him , he has not been a good teacher ...otherwise he would have a replacement ready ... And its not like retired Profs. are not involved in Discussions ,Alumini or all kinds of other programms that they have on a univeristy ...
And the money thing ... hes a Professor ...

Disagree, age shouldn't block you off from a passion. If someone enjoys their subject matter and enjoys teaching and genuinely wants to do it, then you should let them continue. The problem only comes when they are socially pressured or monetarily forced into it against their will.
Old people are still PEOPLE, they should be allowed to do what they want as well.
We had a professor who retired, then he started doing extra seminars etc because he liked teaching, so he could still be teaching but also without having to take up the spots of new professors.

? But thats the "Material reality" of Aging ?.... everything has its time .. its starts ..it runs for a while ..it stops ... (Memento Mori)
And thats how it always been ....
110 year old people should not Drive , 88 year old should not teach outside of Alumini shit ... etc ... he had more then a decade with his passion .. its enough...

Old people are still PEOPLE, they should be allowed to do what they want as well ,
not if its to the detrement of society... (Think Driving) , they are old ..they had half a century to prepare themself for giving up on their passions ...
not only that , old peoples "Brain Cell Connections" are not Able to readjust themself Anew ... Their ability to change or excess new information is severly hindered...
Boomer brain is a real physical thing...
A 88 year old Professor will teach a Topics the same way he teached that topic 25 years ago , not implement "new standarts" thereby stagnating not only themself but the Pupils also ...
dont be silly ... , lets turn this around , shall we ... on what legitimacy should old people carry on in a Top position until they get tired of it or die in it ...
88-year-old professors are pretty much all Emeritus (ie, retired but still associated with the University with an office and research priviliages) Professors since most unis have you step down from full Prof at 65-70 Years old.
He's already made way, he's just teaching a lecture.
EDIT: yeah, his title is Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus. And he's one of the world experts on the reproductive psychology of non-human primates, which seems like a "Get this guy in to take the class, his students are all Jane Godalling it in the Congo."
Especially weird given that he was probably giving small lectures to students actually majoring in the subject, most juniors and seniors have some respect/admiration for their professors by that point
is it normal for a 88 year old to still be working anyway... ?
what a cursed work ethic...

My partner has been watching this show called The Chair and they've had a few funny scenes about this fact.
No, its not, which means our boi either LOVED what he did or NEEDED the money. One is totally cool, the other is horrific.
