Can I get some reading recommendations on the history of colonialism/imperialism in Africa? Anything to do with the meme (about France) would be cool also. I’m not familiar with Euro history so anything to dunk on my lib Euro friends is also appreciated.

And other European powers and the US went along with it - they refused to recognize Haiti's independence and trade until Haiti gave in to the French ransom demand.

For some really good books on pre-colonial Africa, I would recommend Cheikh Anta Diop.

This seems good too: "Before a bomb ended his life in the summer of 1980, Walter Rodney had created a powerful legacy. This pivotal work, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, had already brought a new perspective to the question of underdevelopment in Africa. His Marxist analysis went far beyond the heretofore accepted approach in the study of Third World underdevelopment. How Europe Underdeveloped Africa is an excellent introductory study for the student who wishes to better understand the dynamics of Africa s contemporary relations with the West."

Any time some Euro starts making noise, just talk about Algeria. France retained Algeria as it was considered part of France despite rapid decolonization of its former territories. It was a fucked up war in a fucked up century of fucked up wars, so that's saying something.

Yikes, charging countries for the 'services' you provided by colonizing them. Clown world still manages to surprise me
