It's called a paid placement. A PR or Marketing company will pay a newspaper to run an article that is basically just an ad. It's really common, and like half of all OP eds, especially ones made by public figures are this kind of propaganda.

Sounds likely. In Germany, having a seperate department fpr paid advertising content is a loophole to pay lip service to journalistic standards - the people who write the paid placements never write normal articles and vice versa. This way, the paper can claim that they "clearly seperate" editorial and advertising pieces. Even though the paid placements are never marked as advertising and the more proficient writers manage to make them appear as regular editorial content.

All major newspapers here do this, and some are absolutely excessive and blatant about it. This includes publishers like SPIEGEL and FAZ which are about as reputable here as NYT and WaPo are in the US.

IMO the larger an eatery chain is, the more this adds a downward trend to quality over time, as the ghouls at corporate figure out cheaper and cheaper ingredients with their massive procurement networks. This leads to the worst meat quality I have ever seen outside of McDonalds style eateries, Subway meat. "Meat" might be more accurate. Remember when a study found that a bunch of it was either fillers or different types of meat than what is was labelled as, but everyone kinda forgot? Yeah the definitely probly stopped doing that ;) Right?!?!

It’s all tasteless processed turkey with various flavorings and sodium added to hide it. So gross.

I'm way too amused by that three bullet point summary. As if there's real content to be understood here.

Also in love with how this article's entire premise is "data be damned, I have an anecdote!"

Calling the local news networks every time I have a nice sandwich as a bit

This article exists for the soul purpose of confirmation bias to boomers that the reason shit is changing is younger generations being uppity.

Also: Oh no the small business loan grift disguised as a sandwich company is getting its justice whatever will we do?

    But my sandwich was delicious

    :doubt:

Been to Subway three times and not one of those times was I enthusiastic about what I got

There are many earnest compliments that one could make about Subway: cheap, quick, convenient, etc. "Delicious" is really not one of them, though.

        Basically this

Like, every other deli place just tastes better than Subway

I don't know if it's because Subway is incredibly scanty with the ingredients or what, but gimme a Cousin's sub any day of the week

I used to eat Subway regularly, because it was incredibly cheap. $5 for a BLT that I could grab inside a 10 minute round trip drive. It was... fine. Like, hardly the worst sandwich I've ever eaten.

When I started working downtown, the food options were way better and available at a short walk. So I gave up on Subway, because Tonkotsu Ramen and fresh-made hamburgers and dumplings were way better, even if they were twice the price.

But now that I'm working from home, I just keep ingredients in my fridge. I can make a Cubano with $2.50 of ingredients that tastes way better, and all I need to do is walk upstairs to get it.

These "two-sentances-and-a-picture" articles feel condescending. I'm not a four year old, you can give me 12pt times new roman and a proper paragraph.

I never understood the appeal of subway. I buy takeaway when I don't have the time and/or energy to cook so the idea of standing there being interrogated over what sandwich you want both terrifies and confuses me.

Inflation busting. The meal deal held at £3 for years, and was way more substantial than a supermarket sandwich.

Either I buy a cheap sandwich at the supermarket or go somewhere I where I pay more for better quality fastfood. Subway seems to have sit-down fastfood prices but supermarket-grade quality. Also I can throw a sandwich together at home quickly without cooking. I can't do that for other kinds of fastfood. I have no idea what target audience Subway is even supposed to serve.

It's fucking bizarre. Like if I'm going to a sandwich joint I want you, the restaurant, to give me the sandwich that you have invented and is your specialty. Why would I want to customize ? You, the restaurant, are the experts in the sandwich presumably? If not then I'll just go make one at home right lol?

The only good thing I can possibly say about Subway is like 12 fuckin eons ago I knew a dope ass sandwich artist or whatever they call them who gave us a big pouch of banana peppers when we'd ask for it. Probably the only good actual food there cause it comes pre-pickeled
