You can get behind something like, "Now that we look back on it, the writing came from our own struggles with trans identity and it can be seen in that light or influenced by it." But they didn't know and only come out with it years after they'd transitioned. I haven't heard their exact words so the media could have smudged their original meaning being something like this.
Keanu, I think doesn't see the point in making it an issue or commenting beyond, "I didn't know." Best case all he does is make trans identities feel alienated and feed toxic Internet commenters.

Whether it was originally intended as a trans allegory or not, it's a net positive that trans people can watch it and find meaning in it.
