This shit is so obvious. She has literally been seen in public multiple times and has made statements on her well being. But everything she says is instantly met with claims from the western media that she was brainwashed or coerced into saying it.

After dinner, I was still not willing to have sex. You said you hated me. You said in those seven years, you never forgot about me, and you will treat me well etc…. I was terrified and anxious. Taking into consideration the affection I had for you seven years ago, I agreed… yes, we had sex. Romantic attraction is such a complicated thing [to] explain it clearly. From that day on, I renewed my love for you.

That seems to be the part of her letter that is being deemed "sexual assault" and by no means does that sound anything like sexual assault. It sounds like two people in a very long and complicated relationship dealing with complex emotions. Romance is a messy thing sometimes. Even she says that herself: "Romantic attraction is such a complicated thing [to] explain it clearly."

Zhang is a piece of shit, but Peng’s testimony makes it clear that he did not commit physical violence of any kind against her.

What kind of goal post is that? A powerful government official pressuring an emotionally distressed woman into having sex, especially after an initial rejection, is rape. You cannot possibly call this "consensual".

Nobody cares about what exactly happened, some form of abuse took place and after speaking out about it, Peng Shuai's post was quickly deleted, she went into hiding and later stated the accusations were untrue.

Maybe there's some bulletproof evidence that I've missed here but I'm frankly alarmed that people are this dismissive of the case. You guys remember what "critical support" means, right?

The way you to describe it makes it seem like they hadn't been in an on again, off again relationship for a decade. They started having an affair a decade ago which continued until Zhang got promoted. After his promotion, it was broken off and they fell out of contact. Then he retired and resumed the affair.

[https://www.moonofalabama.org/2021/11/new-york-times-invents-sexual-assault-case-to-blame-china.html#more](Here is what appears to be a much more honest translation of everything.)

It's complicated and messy and there absolutely are some questions about the power dynamic that shouldn't be overlooked, but this is not sexual assault. And more importantly, she was not disappeared or never went into hiding and seems to be fine.

Her later statement is that she was not assaulted, not that what she initially said was untrue.

ah okay, that makes more sense
