Am I alone in thinking Evangelion was a garbage show?

I finally watched it fully early last year, after three attempts over the course of 15 years, and, damn, it was disappointingly bad. It was definitely not the 'intellectual' show I was led to believe it was, just constant mecha fights with some psychologisms and emotional breakdowns as well as obscure and underwhelming Biblical/religious references for teen boys to afterwards feel smug about having learned. And the weird sexualizing of Rei and Asuka while they were still like 14 or whatever was very weird.

Maybe I missed the boat by watching it in my 30's instead of my teens but I thought it sucked.

I'm 31. I watched it for the first time a couple years ago and I loved it. I thought it portrayed themes of loneliness in a really interesting and thoughtful way. And I absolutely love both of the endings. It's definitely one of my top 10 favorite shows ever.

I'm glad you liked it, for what it's worth!

One of my childhood bestfriends was urging and begging me to watch it since we were teens because he loves the show so much, I don't have the heart to tell him I finally watched it and hated it. Haha

I watched it recently for the first time and didn't like it until I watched End of Evangelion. I love it now.

That said, it's not super intellectual but I liked the angle taken for the show with it being less action focused and more character focused (I'm not an action fan). If I watched evangelion in my teens I would be so annoying.

But it has action in like every episode? I feel you though, I was already an annoying teen but I might have been worse.

I kinda refuse to watch more of that franchise though. I read the synopsis of End of Evangelion once I finished the show and it was still fresh but I wasn't impressed enough to want to spend more time on it.

The first half was monster of the week style, which bored me to hell and I was ready to drop, before it moved more into plot. So there was enough non action for me to grab onto and stay.

It was the visuals/sound of End of evangelion that reeled me in too.

What are shows you think are good, particularly anime shows?

I honestly haven't watched too much anime, but I really liked Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Psycho-Pass (only season 1), and From the New World.

It's definitely overrated. Once you've watched a lot of anime, the cracks really start to show. You see the stitches where Hideki Anno and team cobbled together bits of Ideon, Victory Gundam, Top o Nerae/Gunbuster, and Ultraman with an additional scoop of hornyness.

That being said, it has some pretty solid animation and is pretty entertaining.
