    Absolutely love this woman

    But on another related tangent: if you or your parents aren't from "the old country" then you aren't [insert whatever]. Maybe this is contentious, maybe not, but it's seriously annoying hearing people like Biden whose parents weren't from Ireland (to my knowledge) MAYBE his grandparents? but either way bro. You are American. Your parents were American. even if their parents were from Ireland, ok, they got a taste of that immigrant experience second hand. By the second generation it's gone, I'm sorry, it just is. And claiming Irish heritage like this is just sad, annoying, pathetic, whatever else. If you wanna be Irish apply for a passport and go be Irish. Otherwise shut the fuck up because no one cares and you aren't Irish*

    • This applies to "white" mostly European countries because they have been fully and totally assimilated into American culture. If a German comes to the US their kids will be fully accepted with no discrimination at all. That's why it's a bit annoying for grandkids and beyond to cling to this shit. For non-white people I can see things going differently since even 5th generation or whatever Chinese-Americans whose great great grandparents helped build railroads are treated like shit by many white Americans whose families were here less time. Irish Joe needs to stfu or show me his Irish passport though. That's all I'm really trying to say. It's especially insulting because it's Ireland. He can claim English heritage if he wants. Leave the one good Western European country alone.

    Also I searched before posting: his parents WERE NOT from Ireland. He claims Irish heritage back to his great great grandparents. I can't man. I just can't. Fucking Americans have got to cut this shit out. It's embarrassing. "But my mom's name was Irish as fuck!" I don't care.

      Second generation are. Third generation are not, you become fully assimilated at that point imo.

      The one caveat here is when that person has significant direct family living in both locations. Then you get a dual culture thing going on.

      This is the general attitude we have to it in the UK with regards to something like migrants from India, who we have quite a lot of.

        Just to be clear, second generation is grandchildren.

        F0 being the original immigrants who were born and raised in a different country F1 first generation. children of F0 born and raised in the new country F2 second generation, grandchildren of F0, fully integrated F3 great grandchildren with absolutely no ties to the original country

        etc.

        I'd say the difference between F2 and F3 full integration depends upon the country of origin in the US. Like I said, a German F1 who speaks English fluently would be basically on the same level as an F3 in the US just because they're white and no one is going to know differently. A Nigerian family or Indian family won't have that experience, although by F3 and onward they are also definitely fully integrated (although still treated differently, of course).

          Sounds about right. But we don't really do any of this for the western europeans in the UK. There's nothing to assimilate to if they speak the language it's ehhhh that's it really.

          Eastern europeans on the other hand would follow a shortened process like that, unlike non-europeans where the process is longer.

          This is an interesting realisation. I assume it's partially racially/culturally motivated while the other part is probably that it's actually harder for non-europeans to integrate because they're actively treated differently. Definitely a us-foreign-policy thing going on.

      I do always find it hilarious that Trump is way closer to being Scottish (with a literal Scottish mother) than Biden is to being Irish but Biden goes on about it constantly and Trump never mentions it at all.

      To be fair it would be cool if Trump started trying to act stereotypically Scottish ("Robert Burns, wasn't he bonny folks?") but I don't think it's likely, unfortunately.

      There's no absolute rule to this. Migrants can maintain genuine connections to culture and/or the home country across an indefinite number of generations. If you're family's been in the US for 150 years but you speak the old language and/or maintain contact with the old country, you have every right to claim that heritage. Ethnic enclaves are real and valid and assimilation is not a law of nature.

      Americans do this shit all the time. US latinos are some of the worst offenders. My relatives in the US will talk all day about how "latino" they are while acting very American every time they come visit us. Their Spanish is also a weird blend of Google Translate and American slang.

      Even the ethnic enclaves I met in NYC either talk and behave like old men or are very American with some remnants of our culture. The only ones who could pass as being a native of my country were the children of immigrants. Sometimes.
