I was enjoying this show. It was the first time I’ve enjoyed superhero media since I was a kid. I was able to put aside the stupid kick flips and repetitive fighting scenes, but then they introduced a bunch of other stupid ass shit and the show is starting to piss me off.
If the show was just Wilson Fisk, Daredevil, the Punisher, and the legal drama, I would’ve been happy. In fact, I think the only reason I watched this show in the first place was because of the legal drama. You could take out all the superhero nonsense and it would probably make for a better show. But regardless, I was enjoying it. It seemed like it’s just an Everyman vigilante trying to do what he believed was right for his little part of the world.
But no. They started introducing some fucking ancient oriental war bullshit with fucking ninja yakuza ????? who are allergic to guns and use fucking katanas and bows and arrows in the middle of New York. Bruh. Why the fuck does everything need to be about saving the world? Holy fuck isn’t that what the fuck the avengers is for? Why the fuck is the yakuza waging some war in New York? Why is some old white guy so knowledgeable? I mean I don’t give a shit, but you can’t expect me to care when they do nothing with these plot points for like half of the season then suddenly throw it in.
And fucking elektra. God damn this asshole pisses me off. Some fucking strange woman tries to make you kill a man and now you fall in love with her? The bullet from the Punisher really must’ve given him brain damage. I don’t give a shit about any of this. Matt is a fucking selfish shithead and the show tries to address this, but holy shit I don’t need to see this guy run around at rich people parties playing spy while his friends get destroyed in court. Fuck they even got a French guy to use fucking ninja turtle swords to try to kill her. What the fuck is this show???
Just beat people up and speak legalese. It’s a simple fucking premise how did they fuck this up. But they didn’t fuck it up because marvel fans ate this slop up. All of this, of course, is to setup all the subsequent marvel universe superhero squad bullshit. You can’t have a stand-alone story anymore. It doesn’t make money.
the punisher was pretty legit
kept getting annoyed at how everyone shat on him for wasting assholes all the time even though theyd agree with him in some scenes they just completely forget about it in another scene
the entire elektra arc pissed me and my bf off. we were all like 'bro just tell this bitch to fuck off an go back to waifu karen who is way cooler and more sane'. i had pretty much zero empathy for matt by the end of the series. nothing good about him. shrugged off karen who was super vulnerable in regards to her family and her place in the world to go join a psychopath. elektra apparently was good at sex or something cause she SUCKED in all the fights and has a terrible personality, so i think thats all she has going for her. elektra would struggle to take on like 1 or 2 guys while matt cleared the room. punisher was the good guy of the show and when he left the story went to shit
every time a ninja came on screen i said to my boyfriend 'so when is shredder and master splinter gonna show up'
Fun fact: Ninja Turtles actually started as a parody of Daredevil
Specifically to make fun of all the ninja shit Frank Miller was putting in the comics
Also started the hard tilt towards comic books getting "gritty" nearly single-handedly
The Dark Knight Returns is both a good Batman story and also responsible for making comics in the 90's hilariously terrible
Remember, the Electra movie was even worse at making the heroes look competent. There was a whole fight scene which was just Electra fighting tablecloths while her sidekick used a grappling hook to swing like three feet.
Isn't Punisher the guy that cops and vigilante chuds worship because he's everything they want to be
Punisher limited run where he kills the whole MPD for sheltering Derek Chauvin when
Marvel you fucking cowards it writes itself, do it
i mean i agree to some extent that he can be considered reactionary and that a good reformative justice system would be better, but a lot of the guys he wastes use their power and influence to get out of jail and go kill people again or other more messed up stuff. so punisher could be described as a heavily adventurist anarchist
he typically doesnt give a damn about nonviolent crimes, though there were a couple that involved children (like making them homeless) so he shot the guy. in general his soft spot is kids and can make him do rash things
Possibly unpopular opinion but this is also how I felt about Iron Fist. I think everybody hated the bits where he was trying to be a "good" CEO or whatever, which I mean, fair, but I actually thought it made an interesting premise. What happens if you take someone who's not a ghoul and put them in a position of power? It reminds me of the framing used in The Count of Monte Cristo, where a prole gets rich from buried treasure, rather than being born into it or being a cutthroat social climber, and uses his position to assert his vision of justice, without being invested in the existing social order. Anything that plays around with social classes like that is interesting, and even if it isn't explicitly socialist, it at least calls attention to class. And being a superhero means that he couldn't just get merc'ed (although they could certainly try, which would provide the action). I can see potential there for something cool.
Instead it's just, like, evil ninjas are trying to destroy the world, just the most generic and bland plotline imaginable. And without any real social commentary aspect, Danny Rand is just like, a billionaire who's good at punching stuff and into some kind of Eastern mysticism. And since they can't ever do actual social commentary, that's the show. Cheer for this rich white savior weaboo. The premise was the only chance the show had to have any redeeming qualities and they ditched it. Also, I think I remember the evil ninjas being socialist-coded? But I think if you just, like, scrapped the entire show, recast Danny Rand as Asian, and gave the premise to someone who could actually take risks and say something, maybe you could make it work.
Unfortunately this is exactly how Daredevil comics work
The best stories are the ones where it's Matt trying (and often failing) to juggle being a lawyer and whaling on mooks
The problem is that Frank Miller and his weird Japanophilia had to go and stick ninjas and samurai everywhere and nerds fucking loved it
I sure hope so
That guy deserves so much more mockery than he gets
Second season of daredevil is what convinced me ninjas are lame. There has never been, nor will there ever be a movie with cool ninjas. You can make a cartoon or a videogame about ninjas, because those are too abstract, but in a show/movie that is set in a real world? Always looks stupid.
There has never been, nor will there ever be a movie with cool ninjas.
This is Surf Ninja erasure.
The Ninjas were a low point but season 3 gets good again. But also you have the Defenders in between, and it's really not good.
Don’t worry they basically ignore that in the next season and it gets good again. That second half of season two is definitely the low point of the show.
I think that's what killed Netflix marvel stuff for us, we watched Daredevil S1, liked it a lot, watched Jessica Jones S1, great show, S2 of each killed our enthusiasm enough that we didn't even bother watching the other 3 shows
EDIT: or even finishing the S2's
Yeh, Luke Cage is so-so, iron fist kinda blows. Defenders not so good. Punisher was alright but mainly because the casting of Frank was so on point.
But do the Irish make their javelin fly farther by shooting it with a second javelin? Or throw nine spears at once and somehow hit the same guy with all of them?
Gonna take some time to shill the latest Daredevil comics run by Zdarsky, it's really damn good up basically until the exact same thing in the post happens lol. Everything is cool and the interpersonal stuff between Matt and everyone else is tight then suddenly some weird superhero shit starts happening, it's such a shame
It's all just screaming desperation to meld into the MCU as a whole. They won't let these shows stand alone and so they'll tie in bizarre stories and add in characters in the hopes that some are popular enough for a spinoff.
Daredevil -> Punisher
Jessica Jones -> Luke Cage
Rinse and repeat until you hit a wall, which they did.
But I think Fisk made a return in some recent MCU stuff.
If JJ and DD were one season each (including Punisher for the latter), I'd be so much happier than the ridiculous shit we got.
And it used art stolen from a comic creator.

First season was enjoyable, but the second season turned trash so quick. Luke Cage was the same way - the first act was really well done, but then they introduced a ton of characters and random plot lines that I didn't give a shit about. First season of Jessica Jones was fun, but second season of Jessica Jones? Awful.
Luke Cage was a good show right up until they killed off Cottonmouth and replaced him with Diamondback. What started as a street-level drama about the intersection of business and populism became just another show about big dudes punching one another. They almost kinda got back to it in the second season and I genuinely enjoyed the conclusion. I would have appreciated a third season.
Jessica Jones had such a stellar first season, I honestly don't know what they could have done to follow it up. But I'll say this about Season 3. It was basically WW1984 done good. The "am I the baddie?" moment towards the end was earned. I don't regret following it through.
Like with all MCU content, it self referential. That’s the Hand. Introduced in Daredevil so they could follow up with Iron Fist, which ended up being a terrible show.
Daredevil and Jessica Jones were peak MCU content, Luke Cage and Iron Fist took an unfortunate dive in quality. And the Defenders show was meh.
Foggy Nelson was one reason why I love the first season, that and the relationship between him and Matt.
