Here's some more info for those who are blissfully unaware of the existence of this unbelievable piece of garbage: https://www.brasilwire.com/olavo-de-carvalho-the-guru-of-death/

Olavo de Carvalho, the self-styled philosopher, said yesterday in a video that the coronavirus (which has already infected more than 300 thousand people and killed more than 15 thousand people around the world in a few months) ”does not exist” and that it has “not killed anyone, anywhere in the world”.

Bolsonaro’s guru, the guy who runs the anti-vaccine campaign among Brazilians, the guy who already said that “Herod did good to the children of his time by killing them because he prevented them from sinning”, the guy who said that the Portuguese never set foot in Africa and only blacks are to blame for everything they have suffered, the guy who believes Pepsi is made of aborted fetuses, the guy who preaches hatred for Muslim refugees, the guy who supported the murder of children by the American army in Iraq, the guy who only feels manly carrying a gun, and has a hobby of murdering bears in American forests, now recommends that people leave home (except for him, of course, who lives confined in his cave in the interior of Virginia, no he has friends there, doesn’t even speak English and buys everything online, according to himself).

For non-brazilians and brazilians who aren't terminally online, here are some of my favorite stuff Olavo de Carvalho has said:

    • Newton, Einstein and Cantor were dumb because of the Law of Inertia, Relativity and Infinity are dumb concepts respectively . Also the scientific method is useless.

    • The theory of evolution is fake and Darwin was an occultist who fathered the nazi movement.

    • Astrology is a legitimate science (he was an astrology teacher lmao).

    • Brazil under PT was a communist dictatorship. Brazil's far right military dictatorship was not, however.

    • Every single dictator in the history of mankind was communist. Yes, this includes Julius Ceasar.

    • One of his most famous rants was when he said Pepsi was using aborted fetuses as sweeteners - Don't ask about this one i have no idea :what-the-hell: .

    • The State was using the LGBT movement for population control.

    • The reason Africa is poor is not beccause of colonialism silly! It's obviously because african religions "attract disgrace".

    • Cigarretes are actually good for your health and the media is lying to you (Well they were certainly good for him :sicko-yes: ).

    • The Fucking IMF is communist. (In fact he has so much "________ is communist" batshit claims that I could fill an entire list just with those)

And like so much more stuff like "Bill clinton was a chinese spy" and "The Inquisition was soft and good actually". The guy was a complete lunatic and was also a very respected "right wing thinker" which goes to show the absolute thirst for authority figures that the brazilian right wing has since most notable brazilian thinkers are left wing for some reason :thonk:

everything I know about Brazil leads me to believe it quite literally might be the most cursed country on Earth

some of the stuff I've seen Brazilian leftists talk about it is :jesse-wtf:, like the guy who showed up to an anti leftist protest in a US highway patrol uniform

JP is too civil and has a somewhat convincing academic affectation, he acts much more like a professor, whereas Olavo was simply a "old man rants at the sky" style raving lunatic, who somehow was seen as an intellectual by the far-right. The other poster is right, he was more of an Alex Jones kind of guy. Think Alex Jones, but old and grumpy.

It's the Anchorman 2 punchline. "Why don't we just tell people the news they WANT to hear?" "Say that again." "Why don't we just tell people the news they WANT to hear?"
