"Well, deficit reduction by raising taxes is off the table, so we will find some other way to reduce the deficit"

They're responding to skyrocketing prices of food , gas and medicine with brutal austerity,... and they're trying to pretend the deficit matters again after letting the FED print 16 trillion over the past two years to juice the stock market and buy up assets from banks.

Holy shit, I'm going to see a US civil war in my lifetime.

Even in the best case scenario for their plans (where Fed rate hikes and austerity decrease inflation), workers still end up with lower employment and with real wages below the 2019 average. With these assholes in charge, there is no win scenario even on the table.

And I don't think that this will even work as planned, inflation will probably still be above average even if we intentionally decrease our own GDP. Only used car prices might calm down.

I feel like the civil war will be coming sooner than people think and it will kind of resemble the Indian wars, except with right-wing groups that engage in guerilla warfare

It could be but it would definitely be a surprise. I feel like it's going to be longer before that happens. A lot of people in the developed world seem fine with how things are. If anything, crimes are definitely going to go up but no real organized violence just yet. At least not any that will be effective enough to be classified as war.

I mean, we really ought to. It would be worse if nothing happens. :inshallah:

The next step is massive social security cuts. The Grand Bargain will reenter the discourse.

Republicans deregulate, cut taxes and spend (on wars), crash the economy, leave Democrats to try to clean it up, and then Fox News blames Democrats for tanking the economy and increasing the debt, morons eat it up, Republicans get elected, and the cycle of life repeats. I think more Democrats are finally starting to see the pattern

I think you mean, “I think more Democrats young people who are getting screws are finally seeing the pattern. I am a reformed Chud and I can say that if it wasn’t for me going hard left, I would be defending this bullshit. Just like everyone in my wife’s family. They are hardcore libs who will defend everything Biden does. It works on people who are living comfortably because they might have to pay a little more here and there but young people are getting screwed because they are paying and putting in all the grunt work so that boomers can own a rental property.

Maybe during the Dem primaries, but only because they want to fool leftists into believing that the lib candidate is a reasonable compromise.

I wouldn't be surprised if a generation or two in the future communist guerillas operating out of base areas in the Appalachians will wage a protracted people's war against the remains of the US government and its allied warlord forces.

      Yeah look at Appalachia :side-eye-1:

Please Mr :fedposting: don’t look into the Rockies :side-eye-2:

It would suck if all the giant straws sucking water from all the rivers west of the continental divide to the east were to be destroyed. In Minecraft of course. We know that during this time, most of the groundwater will be gone because Americans can’t do anything with efficiency.

At this point Gary Chambers should be the litmus test. If you're not willing to burn a confederate flag (or better :amerikkka:) for a campaign ad, then you're not worth voting for.

Fuck this reconciliation shit with even and especially the right wing of the Democratic party (yes I know it's a right wing party but this is the last of my electoralist :brainworms: speaking)

it is sometimes worth analysising the two party system on its own terms to see how it doesn't hold up under its own pressures.

    Lmao

We’re gonna split this into two parts, first we will do the austerity (forget that taxes on the rich thing though that’s not happening) and once that’s done, then we will focus on the climate piece. Manchin has promised us he will negotiate in good faith on the latter once the former has been secured.

"I can't afford to live a dignified life on my home's two incomes, but at least Biden passed some 'clime reform' policies that amount to a few tax breaks here and there for Teslas or whatever with the taxes I pay on my two jobs delivering designer dog treats to gated suburbs."

Dems really know how not to win people desperate for help over.

Alright folks, quick fix for the deficit, raising taxes for the rich. In and out in 15 mins.

2 years later: deficit is higher due to a small bailout and defense spending over Russia shit, taxes on the rich are lower, min wage is somehow $4.00 and there is no social security

Hey, haters, ~$900 billion is only an ~85% cut from $6T - it's a win!

Matty gave himself a shout out.

Well now I have unpaywalled the column in question so the whole senate can read it.

archive.today • Manchin inflation push prompts White House to consider deficit reduction - The Washington Post

The precise ideas on the table are not clear, and the people familiar with the discussions cautioned they are preliminary and that no written plan has emerged. White House officials have circulated internally a column by the liberal commentator Matt Yglesias suggesting the party could approve $500 billion in climate programs and $400 billion in health-care initiatives — and still unify behind enough tax hikes that the legislation would curb the deficit over 10 years by $800 billion. That kind of bill would probably exclude Biden’s expanded child tax credit, a key priority for fighting childhood poverty, but many Democrats believe it would be better than the current alternative of passing nothing. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity to reflect administration conversations.
