Even without the "stand your ground" defense, Reeves' attorneys successfully argued self-defense. They emphasized that an attack on someone over 65 is considered a felony in Florida and argued that Reeves actions were a "justifiable use of force."

Can't wait to see how well this argument works if a senior who wasn't a retired white cop uses it

Reeves said he hasn't had contact with the Oulson family but said he feels the same sadness for them as he does his own family. However, he said Oulson could have prevented the incident.

"It was something that was, I had no control over. He's the only one that could have kept it from happening," he said. "Certainly none of us, and I'm sure on both sides of the families, none of us wish it had happened like it did.

This guy is basically doing his own officer involved shooting spiel. He just had no control over the trigger upon which his finger was resting and eventually thrust into by an amalgamation of muscles on his person. At that point, hot lead allegedly left the barrel of the gun and the man's heart was pierced.

      :agony-immense:

Imagine basically saying "I have no control over my homicidal urges".

The only time "guns kill people" gets to be used is by cops when they shoot civilians.

Usually these articles try and tell a "balanced" story or reach for whatever they can to justify the shooting, but there's nothing in there at all. Fucked.

You know the SWAT captain, aka a professional murderer for the state wanted some more of that consequence free murdering. If the timeline is as they say that he left the screening room spoke with a manager (who likely told him off) and then went back to sit exactly behind that same - in his eyes annoying - person while carrying a pistol he deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison (as long as we talk real existing USA) as he should be aware of the dangers of firing pistols in close quarters with other people attending, not only the risk of serious bodily harm (and he did actually shot the finger of someone uninvolved), the assault on the peoples ears etc. etc.

Furthermore it is obvious that he had his hand at his gun when returning inside the theater and was premeditating that killing. He did shoot long enough after popcorn hit his face to notice that and I don't buy that instinct defense at all - which wouldn't hold any weight anyhow cause there were plenty of better seats available. This was pure and simple a cop wanting power. People arguing "he could've falled!" in youtube ignore that he was seating in a cushy movie seat, there was no risk of falling whatsoever. ACAB.

The irony is that Reeves could have gone out to his car, got his gun, came back into the theater, continued to escalate the situation until he had an excuse to shoot Oulson, and there's a really good chance that Reeves would have still gotten away with murder.

Stories like these always make me think adventurist thoughts. Vigilante justice in Minecraft. Ugh. This system must be torn down at its root.
