I feel like there's something going on there, but collating examples and putting them on a timeline might help. I feel like part of it was brunch ladies on twitter were a lot more open about their sexuality in general, in a way that it kinda became a shibboleth for liberal media as a whole. Being open and comfortable about your sexuality is a good thing in and of itself, but is more pernicious when it's liberal media telling you to be horny about someone because they stood up to Trump or whatever.
