If you don't want to play the original that's fine, but the remake seems to be written with the assumption that the player is familiar with the original and diverges from the original's story pretty wildly with time travel/alternate universe shenanigans.
Eh. They just kinda slide that in at the end as a mea culpa for changing up the end-game.
If you go back to the original history of FF7, it was well-received but it was also heavily aborted and trimmed back from what the developers had originally planned. So I'm not surprised the Remake is dusting off the original design guide and stenciling a few new ideas into the margins of the original. But all told, its been about as faithful to the original game as anyone could ask for, while still incorporating a huge interface and graphics improvement.
All the major plot points get hit, at least within the first disc. A bunch of stuff in later discs is alluded to. My biggest complaint is that they're dragging their feet on the next release while trying to cram in a bunch of Bonus DLC bullshit that isn't even compatible with the system the game was originally released on.
I liked it, I'm glad I only borrowed it from my local library though instead of buying it. I played through the original when I was a kid so there was definitely some nostalgia there. The dialogue can be pretty painfully cringey - it's probably okay for a kid or teen or whatever but as an adult I groaned a lot (like, I loved Tales of Symphonia as a kid, I got my gamecube out and booted it up and got through about 2 hours before I had to put it away lol). If you can, borrow it from your library and play it a bit and decide if you like it or not. If you can't handle the anime cringe within the first 3 or 4 hours, well, it ain't getting any better on that front. I don't think the combat or skill stuff will be so appealing that you should play it despite the story, so unless you're into it, forget it and just read a synopsis if you simply MUST know what happens.
