I mean do they still let you be the mayor if you're not rich?
dudes got a watch who tf has watches these days but booj
edit: heheheh
It really is a fantastic symbol for those with more money than they know what to do with. Absolutely no one needs a watch today. Except maybe people who spend a lot of time underwater, seems like it might be useful then.
sometimes you wanna check the time without having to get your phone, and risking spending precious minutes of your life looking at bullshit on the internet
password protect your phone, you arent required to give cops a password (unlike biometrics). and then unless you make the active decision to go through the momentary inconvenience to unlock the phone, it is essentially a pocket watch.
if you cant keep yourself from inputting your password to unlock your phone to look at cat videos, how do you stop yourself from pulling it out of your pocket to do so
because it's in my pocket? anyway, my main point is that it's not necessarily bourgeois decadence to own a watch, unless it's some fancy rolex or a techbro spy machine
Phones suck for checking the time. If I'm working with my hands I don't want to stop what I'm doing, wash my hands, and pull my phone out to look at some numbers. This take is extremely out-of-touch and only applies to white collar do-nothing jobs where one is never actually busy or dirty. Healthcare, food service, any blue collar job — a watch is better if not necessary. I have never seen a nurse without a watch, for instance.
I have never seen a nurse without a watch
holy shit. I don't have a horse in this race, but this just blew my mind. you're 100% right and I've literally never thought about that before.
This is honestly a goofy af take.
Would you shit on someone for non-time telling jewelry? "No one needs bracelets anymore"
Watches are awesome little contraptions that sit on your wrist minding their business until you glance at them. Not every watch is a $10k Omega.
“No one needs bracelets anymore”
no one ever needed bracelets, they're decorative. watches are just outdated technology, the purpose of which is served by something you already own
A $15 Casio watch never snitched on my location to a cell tower while I was at a protest.
and a plain white t-shirt, a dress shirt, and a t-shirt with a swastika on them are all just shirts, but they communicate completely different things about the person wearing them
That's sorta the point. No one ever needed bracelets, yet every culture ever have made them. Its not a bad thing to find some joys in life that can double as utility.
you'll notice at no point have i ever said anything negative about bracelets as a whole.
Sure, which is why i'm using bracelets. Watches are essentially bracelets with a widget that provides a function.
So if bracelets aren't inherently bourgeoisie, neither are watches. Both can be bourgeoisie, but to classify all as bourgeoisie because they no longer serve a purpose, is what makes this take goofy.
additionally, others have made the point providing situations where checking your watch is infinitely easier and more appropriate than checking your phone. Plenty of situations where you can't touch your phone because your hands are nasty, don't want to pull your phone out in an environment where it could be damaged, etc. Why risk your multi-100 dollar lifeline to modern times when you could wear a sub 100 dollar widget that never needs charging.
I have a fairly cheap digital watch, the strap broke a few months ago and before I got a new strap I would be checking my wrist for the time at least 8 times per day. The convenience of having the time a half second away from me at all times really can't be understated.
you can buy a cheap ass digital watch for like $15 bucks, hell even a decent analog you can buy used for like $50-$100 if you really want one
does having a spare $15 make someone bourgeois?
:side-eye-1: :side-eye-2:
Counterpoint: Che and Fidel were Watch Guys...
IMO if you're doing any sort of criminal or suspicious activity you should have a watch. Gotta be able to look quickly at the time.
Also I got a watch when I started working with kids. Can't have your phone out all the time, it's much quicker to look at your wrist.
Just a bunch of normal dudes spending a great deal of time and energy to achieve a very normal goal.
