Willy Joseph Cancel, a dumbass 22-year old former USA marine, got killed in Ukraine. Widowing his wife and leaving behind a 7 month baby. Aside from being a former marine at 22 (somehow) he was a corrections officer who dreamed of being a NYPD officer. Strong :le-pol-face: vibes

Who the hell does a military tour as a private, then decides they absolutely need to do mercenary work? Why would they want even more shitty, life threatening work conditions?

Was probably "asked to leave" the Marines for whatever reason (maybe war crimes), but still wanted to murder people.

Then, he found out the hard way that there's plenty of people in the world capable of murdering him right back.

That just gets you promoted! He probably was just too much of a pants shitting coward for even the US military.

Nah, I think it really depends who you are. If you're a reasonably intelligent and "useful" person to have around, then yeah, they're perfectly happy to have you going around doing war crimes if that's what makes you happy. But if you're so stupid that everyone occupying the same room as you starts forgetting how to breathe, and you're some kind of psychopathic murdering freak, then they'll probably be glad to have the excuse to get rid of you.

20 years of Call of Duty and an occupation of a country while at a complete power advantage versus fighting a peer military for the first time since Korea or something.

        :fuck-around:

The Marines would probably not send you home for war crimes. You're much more likely to get sent home for either having a mental illness or reporting being sexual assaulted. Both equally dishonorable, in their eyes.

Most American mercenaries follow this trajectory. During the height of Iraq and Afghanistan, PMC pay was a lot better than military pay while doing less dangerous work and having fewer rules. I think that ship has sailed though and it definitely didn't apply to Ukraine's foreign division, which has been treating its volunteers like chaff this entire conflict.

Sir he was chasing the glory of a solider's life! Far more honorable than the soibois at home masturbating and gaming!
