Tesla is around ~1% of the total car market, IIRC. So they make the same product as everyone else, but at a smaller scale. And it leaks water and might randomly decide to kill you.

The only credit Tesla deserves is proving that people(no matter who they are) are actualy willing to pay quite a premium for an electric car specialy if it is a fashion statement. Tesla proved EVs are profitable, that is all. Yes their cars suck and there are far better EVs from Europe and China.
People shouldn't mistake bashing Tesla as a view that traditional auto makers are inherently better. Tesla sucks and so do all the others for different reasons.
Volkswagen was caught on the whole emissions scandal, the US manufacturers were struggling after 2008 and couldn't even compete with the Japanese etc...
The traditional auto makers were always in deep ties with the oil industry and they wanted whatever excuse they could use in order to not have to invest billions in retooling their factories and designing a new type of car not to mention having to deal with a whole new supply chain around making car batteries.
