I am genuinely concerned it's going to look too good compared to every other asset and make the rest of the game look bad
oh wow this looks stellar, I love willows so much! they're always so beautiful, you really got their likeness down in how you drew out the foliage. stunning work!
Been following pixel art twitter partly because of you and there's some great shit on there
There is a lot of great inspiration out there, I use some of it for reference just to see how people accomplish so much detail with such low resolutions. Also a lot is justifiably made about how horrendous twitter is, but I've found that indie dev / pixel art twitter is generally pretty supportive and positive overall. I never feel beleaguered by toxicity or bad takes when I check out my work twitter account.
Yeah! With a very dark color palette and rainy aesthetic. It's going to be a wave survival game with some pet simulator elements
and be about defending your sustainable settlement from imperialist invaders wearing red, white and blueHere's the last video I took just displaying some assets I have currently laid out.
Ooo neat, that aesthetic reminds me of Momodora: Reverie under the Moonlight , the backgrounds really play a very large part of the atmosphere in this moody and rainy style.
One of my favourites. I'm glad the author is going back to pixel art for their next Momodora game, the 3d models just don't work as well in Minoria in my opinion.
I have it installed right now and it's actually the next game I'm going to play after Trek to Yomi - how long is it? Its a pretty short metroidvania, yeah?
Yeah i think a slow play is probably around 4 to 6 hours depending on how much you rush or stand around and soak things in. 100% is about 9 to 11.
It doesn't have any filler or parts that drag though like a lot of metroidvanias, all feels good.
Killer, sounds like just what I'm looking for! There's a new Momodora game coming soon too, no?
Yeah one was announced but i don't know how soon it's coming, the dev clearly plays FFXIV so it depends on how much they're distracted by that I guess haha
I'm really interested in venturing into some low poly, low res stuff for a future game, but the style definitely needs to sync with the aesthetic.
I still haven't gotten around to playing Kor yet because it's not quite my type of game (and I just haven't played many new games recently). I will eventually though.
But this sounds more like my kind of game so I'm definitely looking forward to it. Keep us updated!
Thank you!
Of course I will be keeping Hexbear in the loop, you guys are basically my only "fanbase", for lack of a better term.
Sometimes I wish I had the patience for manual art. I love me some procedural art/particles/shaders but you're all out here making a specific image and that rocks.
It does take a really fuckin' long time. This tree alone took me like two days of actually pixeling, not counting the amount of time it took me to decide on how it might look in the first place and then seek out some references and stuff.
Sometimes I get bummed that I haven't fully learned how to draw yet, then I remember drawing even simple shit takes hours and hours of unwavering concentration, and I know I just don't have the time to even learn, and even if I did I would probably be better served learning to do music instead.
:sadness:
I'm coming up against stuff like that too, I greatly underestimated how much work creating parallaxing background layers would be.
Also you were not wrong, pink is a great color for this tree!
I'm finding that no matter how simple I try to keep a project, it inevitably turns out about 10x more complicated that I mean for it to be, so I can totally sympathize.
This looks great. You get the sense of depth with just 4 colors? Or is it 5. I'm not good at numbers. Either way, very minimalist and cool. Keep it up and feel free to post more. :meow-bounce:
Just 4 colors! The trunk is 1 color, the leaves are 3 shades.
Thank you for your encouragement!
I love pixel art, I grew up with it in the old 90s videogames. Thanks for keeping it alive!
If you're on twitter there's a bunch of great pixel art that gets posted there. I started following pixel art twitter just because of Goadstool
I got banned a long time ago and now I just use nitter to browse shit without an account. Being able to get into spats with unrepentant dipshits wasn't good for my health lol.
I was thinking about this. It would make it excusable that it looks so nice.
Using GameMaker 2 right now, same thing I used for Kor (so I don't have to spend so much time learning).
Looks nice! It's cool that other people do video game editing here. I'm into modding for gzdoom but can't make a game from scratch, that's impressive.
This is awesome! I've tried to do pixel art but it's too tedious for me.
That's how I feel about trying to do any kind of art, even though I want to learn
