And america failed.

I know so many people who are still throwing baby showers, traveling for leisure, and carrying on as usual. and these are generic libs in a lib city. Chatting at restaurants with masks off, putting their mouths all over dishes that some server has to carry, and a dishwasher has to clean.

On an interpersonal, economic, and governmental level, we are a failed state.

Correction: Coronavirus is a test of this nation's ability to fight Fascism.

      We are failing.

Holy shit the defeatism in this thread!

For all this talk of fascism, I must have missed the brownshirts marching. I did see the largest ever protest movement in US history this summer, and it was/is an antiracist protest movement. And it spread across the country from big cities to little towns, white kids in Kentucky marching around yelling Black Lives Matter, a physical manifestation of how fast consciousness is shifting with capitalism tumbling into crisis. Outnumbering right wing protests and counterdemonstrations by probably 100 to 1.

This is prime time for left organizing, and I don’t see how we’re going to be successful at that if we can’t soberly assess the balance of forces. There is a huge, sympathetic audience for our message. There were polls showing, before this historic crisis of capitalism we find ourselves in, that something like 50% of the people under the age of 30 in the US feel more favorably about “socialism” than “capitalism.”

The failure here is ours: it is the failure of the political left, to effectively organize what amounts to a massive shift in consciousness. A failure to provide some kind of political leadership, because what is needed is a path out of crisis and an alternative to capitalist politics of all stripes offering no way forward.

Defeatism lets you off the hook—tasks that are difficult begin to seem impossible, and you act as if they are impossible. Events are unfolding so fucking quickly that they are piling on top of each other. It is the time for bold ideas and bold organization, not fighting off the back foot.

If a civil war happened in the US, the suburban moms would act like nothing is happening "There is no war in Ba Sing Se"

We already have a de facto civil war - the pigs going after black people. And right now as we speak, suburban whites are both a) pretending like it not a war on black people and b) super willing to lick pig boot and talk about blue lives matter because they see cops as their own little army keeping the black people out of their suburbs.

There is no civil war if we dont fight back. The oppressed must fight back. Right now, it's just a mass murder

I remember, way back in the early stages when Italy was getting absolutely pummeled wondering how the US would cope. Shortly after, wearing or not wearing a mask became politically charged in that weird theatre the dems and republicans put on and I knew they were fucked.

Should be something that everyone agrees on and yet it’s just another partisan battleground.

This is true about so many issues: abortion, racism, LGBT rights.
The point of making it political is to divide and disorganize the population, such that they are more exploitable.

And by making the Republican party so terrible, people feel like they have no choice but to vote for the lesser evil, instead of empowering a third party.
The most important part of this two party system is maintaining it via propaganda and gerrymandering such that the Republicans keep about 50% of the vote, perfectly balanced.

Everything is a culture war now. Us vs them politics means you can create a loyal voter base and keep winning elections, and therefore keep making money. It also means that you can plow through stuff like a pandemic, because doing stuff that would harm the economy is what The Bad People want.

I swear to god, if you told Americans that there was a republican and a democrat testicle, a significant percentage of the US population with testicles would cut a nut off.

Coronavirus was a test of the nation's ability to respond to unforeseen challenges.

    And it succeeded.

In the face of an easily spreadable disease, the Capitalist ruling class was able to obfuscate the choices into "work and die" or "Stay home and die". The working class continues to stay divided between workers, who are now resentful of each other. Essential workers think that office drone workers have it easy. Office Drone workers have faced domestic challenges, including their loss of child care network, and sometimes their partner's income.

Instead of banding together as a class, they have continued to demand recuperation to individual corporations and take aim at the government. Those that do are few and far between. The government in its continued operation as a settler-colonial white supremacist state has managed to keep most of the deaths to Latino, Indigenous, and Black Americans. Which in our own understanding and theirs, fall as nominal second class citizens of little value.

And this is why the US will collapse.

We are facing big challenges as a country - COVID, insane levels of wealth inequality, more and more people not being able to get healthcare, etc. And every indication is that this country would rather go down in flames than try and recognize real challenges and face them head-on.

Agreed. I've heard a lot of libs complain about anti-maskers and that crowd, but I think they are a minority. I think general selfishness and an inability to change anything is divorced from ideology and simply hammered into the American psyche.

Oh that's a beautiful graph. So glad to see my country just below the US on both this graph and the actual real stats when the pandemic happened.

Where Governments lie, God does not lie. Where Governments change, God does not change. And I’m through now. But let me leave you with one more thing.

Governments fail. The government in this text comprised of Caesar, Cornelius, Pontus Pilot – Pontius Pilate – the Roman government failed. The British government used to rule from east to west. The British government had a Union Jack. She colonised Kenya, Guana, Nigeria, Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Hong Kong. Her navies ruled the seven seas all the way down to the tip of Argentina in the Falklands, but the British failed. The Russian government failed. The Japanese government failed. The German government failed. And the United States of America government, when it came to treating her citizens of Indian decent fairly, she failed. She put them on reservations. When it came to treating her citizens of Japanese decent fairly, she failed. She put them in internment prison camps. When it came to treating her citizens of African decent fairly, America failed. She put them in chains. The government put them in slave quarters, put them on auction blocks, put them in cotton fields, put them in inferior schools, put them in substandard housing, put them in scientific experiments, put them in the lowest paying jobs, put them outside the equal protection of the law, kept them out of their racist bastions of higher education and locked them into position of hopelessness and helplessness. The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law, and then wants us to sing “God Bless America.” No, no, no. Not “God Bless America”; God Damn America! That’s in the Bible, for killing innocent people. God Damn America for treating her citizen as less than human. God Damn America as long as she keeps trying to act like she is God and she is supreme!

Not in like a conspiracy kind of way, but its like Corona was designed to punish us for our hubris. We will never learn anything, the only thing that will change is that the government will design more ways to hold up the economy for an extra month
