23 year old air conditioner broke, it is literally 95+ degrees in my home

somehow there are only like 3 or 4 (of the most common size) units left in the entire state of florida so i'm just waiting

please fucking shoot me, it would be a genuine kindness

failing that, any advice for not succumbing to heatstroke would be appreciated

it's ice time. you got a fridge? time to use it. make as much ice as you can, also stick your head in the freezer to cool off. another idea might be something like a dehumidifier, since one of your main challenges is the shear humidity of florida air. you can also help yourself by keeping your windows closed and your blinds down and your doors all closed during the hot and bright parts of the day. this is something that they do in places like the Levant to manage interior heat without active cooling. I don't have an A/C where I live, but it still gets 85 F + with > 90% humidity all the time so this is what I do to stay cool.

      :jesus-christ:

all good advice though, i'm doing all of the above rn except the dehumidifier since i don't have one

though that would certainly help; may have to consider splurging

Swamp cooler! Do you have a fan, some ice, and an ideally-insulated vessel like a cooler?

Put the ice in the cooler with a decent amount of salt, position the fan on top to blow the cool air out of the cooler. There's a bunch of pics and videos on the internet to give you an idea

you could push a cart around in an air conditioned place like Target or Walmart without buying anything

It's 30°c here i don't think that's as hot but very hot for here and I'm working on the 14th floor of an unfinished high-rise and the lift is busted.

No advice but if someone has an extra bullet for me that'd be nice

it may not be as hot where you are but at least i can lay on the tile and do nothing

      stay safe comrade.

or we can go for the mutual kill if that's not an option

Wet a couple hand towels or wash cloths and put them in the freezer and then put them on the back of your neck. Multiple so you can alternate while one cools down.

Lotion will help a fan make you feel cooler.

Find somewhere to go for a while at the hottest part of the day, be it a restaurant, a library, a coffee shop, your workplace, just somewhere with AC that you can just sit in for a while.

this is a great substitute for not having enough ice trays to fill up a freezer as well. the more thermal mass in the freezer, the more stable it's coldness will be.

If you have a hose, spray down the sunny side of your house. It'll cool it down a little as it evaporates.

I just went through this three weeks ago. We had a heat wave and it got over 94 degrees in my apartment because my 40 year old ac couldn't keep up with the heat. I spent 12 hours doing nothing but trying to keep me and my cat from getting dangerously hot.

If you have fans and windows, try to force the hot air out with one and bring fresh air in with another. I grabbed multiple buckets and filled them with ice and put them in front of fans to try to create a little bit of cool air. Constantly be sipping on water. Keep wash cloths or paper towels with cold wet water on your body.

glad you and the kitty made it through without deep frying!

unfortunately i've got precisely one fan but i'm loading up ice to put in front of it as mentioned by you and a few others. thanks <3

Could anyone let you borrow a fan? I had exactly one desk fan, and a friend let me borrow 3 standing fans that were literal lifesavers. Then the next day, another friend let me borrow a portable A/C unit that kept us cool-ish for 3 weeks until maintenance could replace my A/C. It still got dangerously hot in the bedroom, so I just kept that door shut and stayed in the living room.

I'm really sorry you're going through this, it's terrible. Hang in there, comrade. :heart-sickle:

unfortunately this is a borrowed fan. the (literal fucking lifesaving) news is the a/c people just called and said there was an issue or something with one of the installs they were gonna do so now i'm officially Next In Line

so it should only be a day or so more :inshallah:

I just read that you have kitties, too! A few times an hour, I would wet paper towel with cool (not super-duper cold) water, wring it out, and wipe it on my cat to cool her off. She's a long-haired cat who gets really hot, so I wanted to make extra sure that she was doing okay. She also really appreciated it and would sip the cool water from her fur.

Putting a couple ice cubes in their water might entice them to drink more. Cats can be kinda dumb sometimes and don't hydrate as much as they need to, lol.

Get a big standing fan that you can easily move around and take it into whichever room you're in.

Get a big floor fan and stay hydrated. If it's an option, sleep through the hottest part of the day with the fan going on you, and have a window fan going at night.
