Fantastic journalistic research on display - LEGO have a directive that they never make explicit replicas of any type of war or military equipment. They did produce a Technic version of the Osprey aircraft but it was almost immediately removed from sale after they changed their mind, even when it was an air/sea rescue model.

The no military stuff seems to only apply to stuff made after WWI. There were sets with 1880s US military equipment (rifles and cannons). As someone else said, there were WWI era fighters too.

Also they're completely fine with fake war as in Star Wars too. They're more clearly avoiding "political" wars then war itself.

I do distinctly remember seeing a Sopwith Camel and Red Baron set in a Lego catalog though... Did they change something there?

Yeah, the line has moved from when they started. Original Lego had a yellow castle because they didn't want kids to make tanks from grey parts. They now have made the WW1 plane set and a few Lego Nazi minifigures from Indiana Jones, although without any explicit imagery.

I mean they also have pirate ships and medieval castles, all depicting top of the line weapons of their time.

I gotta find me that set that sounds great
