Looked up zoolander 2 for reasons and it "only" made $57 million at the box office on a budget of $50 million. That's a 14% profit and everybody involved in making the damn movie already got paid, like damn what a flop
I think some marketing costs aren't actually included in the budget number, so the actual cost of the movie is usually higher
Yeah the general rule is that the actual cost of movies is double the reported budget because advertising isn't added into the budget. So $57 million is actually a loss since the studio probably spent $100 million all told.
you'd think hollywood account would account for that nyuk nyuk nyuk
Yeah; coupling that with their weird non inclusion of certain marketing stuff means it's always hard to know how 'well' something actually did without the full books
There's also the thing about the investors/producers wanting to make back their money within a certain period of time. Don't make 50% over the cost of production within the summer blockbuster season? ITS A FAILURE!
Movies are literally made to fail, for tax reason/money laundering.
Look for 7 million you can clean up 2, maybe 3 dead hookers tops
Hollywood financiers aren't coming to bat for any less than that okay
how the fuck does it cost that much to clean up a dead hooker? my estimates have been WAY off
oh of course, I was like, damn, how much can a barrel, a few pounds of lye, and an absence of conscience really cost
marketing is usually around the same amount as production
so they spent ~$100m or so and lost money
but what about the value of reinforcing the Zoolander IP and all of its MERCHANDISING merchandising merchandising
on the other hand it's very funny that the most recent wizard movie may have lost money overall, due to the massive marketing budget something like that has.
ok but Zoolander 2 was a fucking abomination of a movie that should have never been made
don't let me stop you, there's a lot to hate lol. all the jokes are dog shit and I'm pretty sure there's shitty transphobic stuff too. I watched it in theaters and I'm still pissed about it
Generally speaking entertainment is a riskier investment so investors would want higher returns than something more stable. Since the hits have to cover for flops.
