so yes, it is not a coincidence that queer acceptance and decolonization go in sync in ukraine these days. because they are intertwined within the ultimate queerness of being a ukrainian

Not only that, only 14% of Ukrainians support legalizing it. In Russia, it's 9%. Both places are queerphobic as fuck, to a much greater extend than even the worst red states in the US, Russia is mostly just more mask-off about it than Ukraine. Still, Azov routinely attacked gay bars, there have been amnesty international reports about this since 2014 when the west started taking UA fascists under its wings. That pride parade can only happen in Kiew when it is walled off from the frothing, fascist mob is in part NATO's fault. That assaults on queer people by azov nazis are practically never persecuted, that is at least partially due to their patronage from the west.

That is not to excuse the ridiculous amount of anti-queer sentiment in Russia. The hunting down of queer people under Ramzan Kadyrov in the Russian province of Chechnya was probably the worst act of homophobic violence since many decades, we're talking about thousands of people getting murdered by government death squads who spied on them on dating sites. After the murders, Kadyrov joked in front of the international press why they were asking about a persecution of gay people, "there are no gay people in Chechnya." It's absolutely appalling. Oh, it also didn't bother any of the western libs before the war.

But to paint Ukrainians as the defenders of gay rights, that's ridiculous. I dread the prospect that this homophobic regime, led by an openly transphobic bastard like Zelensky, could very well become part of the EU soon.

Even American regime mouthpiece Freedom House acknowledges the climate of fear around being queer in Ukr https://freedomhouse.org/sites/default/files/2021-07/FH-AnnualReport2020-EN_v03.pdf

Also, neoliberal prescriptions continue to fail at social equality: "On the state level, despite smooth cooperation between Roma NGOs and the authorities, Ukraine implemented no effective measures to minimize anti-Roma attitudes. Similarly, there is no progress in proper response to hate crimes against Roma and other vulnerable groups. On the contrary, the situation keeps getting worse."

Peace Corps has a page dedicated to non white, non straight, non cis, and female volunteers who plan on traveling to Ukraine.

They warn people that you’re likely going to experience racism and all kinds of -phobias, but it’s okay because you’re doing it for a good cause lol.

It is not uncommon for Ukrainians to refer to African-Americans as “[N-Word]”. Volunteers of color may be called 'a monkey' or may see children’s games with Blackface. Being aware of the history of dehumanization for people of African descent may help inform where this comes from

Yeah I’m sure black people who are upset by the N word don’t know the history of dehumanization for black people of African descent

You're either on the side of the Ukrainians or you're on the side of the Russians. And since the Russians are Anti-Queer, we can safely assume that the Ukrainians are Pro-Queer. That's because there are always only two sides to every fight. Just ask Nestor Makhno

Weren't Trans Ukrainian women trying to get out first because they were afraid they'd be made to de transition and be conscripts? Like, stopped at the Polish border because their ID's said "male" and then sent back?

Sometimes I try to tell Libs that this Identity politics more often will be co-opted and weaponized into preserving the shit state of affairs we're all chafing under, and this is a prime example.

Yeah sure if you just say that everything anti-LGBT is Russian and everything pro-LGBT is Ukrainian, then repression of Ukrainianness does heavily correlate with repression of queerness, and if you say that 2 times 2 is 5 then 5 is indeed an even number.

Interesting, a white people in Europe are the most oppressed group in the world, comparable to queerness. I would have guessed any actual minorities or peoples colonized near the point of extinction, but I guess this is the case. Sorry black people, sorry transpeople, but this white nazi was asked to not kill someone for speaking a slightly different language, he wins the suffering Olympics.

A mass grave, you say? Will it be one that was dug by Ukrainians for a wholesome pogrom or a fresh one?
