It's a proportional response/flex and puts the ball on the us/taiwan field making them sweat quite a bit. The 96 response was one of a much weaker China against a weaker provocation . So this seems like a calculated ramp up that's not killing the second in line politician of the US
if china intends to actually invade taiwan, something will happen
if taiwan or the U.S. decide to shoot at the chinese, something will happen
A whole lot of nothing that may, in time, add up to something.
