Yeah I know we skipped WW3 now let's just get this whack ass dolphin/alien party started
I dunno. Who'd be the main actors? Do you think it'd be over one of the US's "rogue states" getting a new nuke from China or something? I'd say Iran and DPRK are more than capable of getting their own, China only has about 300, which is more than enough to wipe out the US, but they've got them already and that's that. I don't think Tim Cook, Musk, and Bezos want their profits cut by a war. They'll do a bourgeous coup.
Its hard for me to imagine tbh.
I sincerely doubt the India-Pakistan thing will ever pop off. China has bullied India for years, both countries have nuclear arsenals, and nothing has ever come of it. Nobody wants to leave the planet in nuclear winter for generations.
It would take genuine fash who don't give a fuck about anything other than their insane ethnostate to nuke the planet dead.
I do sometimes wonder if two nuclear equipped nations would go to war with each other with some kind of unwritten gentleman's agreement to not use nukes on each other, sort of like that weird coincidence in WW2 where neither axis nor allies used chemical gas against each other despite both sides having the capability and countermeasures. Unless you were China against the Japanese, of course.
Over home territory? Idk. Depends on how insane the ruling government is.
Over non-nuclear proxies? Never. No state would ever be client to you again.

Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure this was due to them kind of accidently inventing Mutually Assured Destruction before MAD was ever invented. They both feared that if chemical weapons were used, the other side would retaliate just as harshly. However, Germany's intelligence was so bad that they didn't realize they had the most lethal gas at the time. Additionally, the German army was not even close to as motorized and mechanized as you were probably taught in school. They relied heavily on horses and didn't have enough horse gas masks, so any gas attack would paralyze the already disasterous logistics problem.
