This is the top 15 junior (under 20) players in the world by elo
chess players from the USSR were often accused of "spreading the revolution" and encouraging "extremest fifth column attacks" amongst opponents' pawns in chess tournaments :very-smart:
Why does every competition need to be representative of a nation? Wish people could just compete cause they want to
A lot of chess competitions are just chess players playing, the olympiad (most recent major tournament) however is kinda the Olympics of chess.
It was over an argument about Irans refusal to play with Israeli players too
I understand why Firouzja left, Israel is/was very important on the Middle eastern chess stage, and if you can't play against them then you lose a lot
Now I also understand Iran's thinking, but things dont have to be black and white correct and not.
Probably a stupid question, but what's the blue white and green flag for 4, 12, and 13?
Uzbekistan
Not stupid at all, the central asian countries still confuse people a lot
FIDE flag, the russian flag is banned by FIDE. FIDE is the international chess federation.
WIM according to chess-results. Still amazing 9.5/11 absolutely wild
Oh yeah, I wasn't sure if she was getting a WIM or WGM norm from this tournament. Anyways, 9.5/11 is god tier.
Yaaa no idea how the norms work in a tournament like this but damm that's a performance rating at the GM level.
Overall young players killed it. I mean Uzbekistan winning with a young team, India 2 absolutely going wild. Amazing Olympiad. Just some Shakey performances from the worlds top players
Yeah, it was really amazing to see except for the fact that the US was such a big letdown. Fabi is one of my favorite players and I hope he gets back in form soon!
Fabi is one of my faves too so that part was painful. I'm sure he'll get back to it but it was a rough ride. Everyone on that team struggled this tournament. So was the best... Only lost 2 rating points.
Yeah, that tough candidates tournament probably led to this.
Also, some of Carlsens recent results makes me think he wont be reaching the 2900 mark, which is quite a shame as it'd put a lot of Fischer stans to rest I think as to who the GOAT is.
Ya I can't imagine after collapsing a bit in the 2nd half of the candidates tournament he's feeling great. Especially considering Carlson not defending. He is a pro. He'll be back.
Carlson did fine in this tournament... But ya gotta do better than fine to get 2900. Can't be drawing IMs
It's gotta be weird getting famous and making money by playing chess. Because the game is literally a game, it's designed to teach strategic thinking and be fun, and you now have few practical skills and have either no fun with it or an obsession with a game.
Playing chess is fun and making money off of it is like any other sport tho
Don't think a lot of pro football players, or any other sport for that matter, are in it for the fun of the game anymore. Chess is fun, so is playing soccer with your friends, but to get to the professional level you keep going well past the point of fun.
I actually think a lot of pro athletes are in it for "the love of the game" which is why you'll see them un-retire and stuff. I think their "love of the game" may lean more in the direction of "competitiveness" than "fun", but those are kind of two sides of the same coin in sports. There's also all the stuff around being a professional athlete--like the camaraderie and team atmosphere and stuff.
Tom Brady is a great counter to your statement. Dude has to love the game to keep going for so long, with that much success.
My comment was specifically about the people that make a decent chunk of change off of it
I haven’t been paying attention to chess for a couple years. Holy shit that kid from France. Holy shit. Super GM rating under 20.
Youngest ever 2800 too, he beat Carlsens record by 5 months, he was a pretty young 18. also he’s from Iran not France, but France is where he lives/who he plays for
Nice to hear somebody’s beating Carlsen at something other than rapid or blitz rating
