Don’t worry about character creation. It’s not a game you can minmax. Embrace failure. Enjoy being a piece of shit

While all stat builds can be interesting, I’d recommend starting your first playthrough with the Sensitive build, as many of the PSY and Shivers passives are goated for story reasons, and upgrade your INT and MOT skills from there as needed.

    give our boy love :kitsupogi:

I did the int build on my playthrough (I wanna do the sensitive one next) and my impression is that it leads to a regime where you can see and understand all of the bad stuff, especially historically, but have a lot of trouble acting on it.

Maybe a little too real for socialists...

Whichever political ideology you choose, do the quest for it.

It better be communism, you fucking fuck.

Make sure to complete the insulindian phasmid quest

Shivers and Inland Empire are very good stats- not mechanically, narratively. A lot of people also like Espirit du Corps for the lore it gives, as well

And my single favorite moment in the game comes from passing a Volition check, so do with that what you will.

But in general, don't stress too much. A big thematic and mechanical point of the game is overcoming failure. Most checks can be redone, and some of the best moments come from failing checks

Play through the game blind and without any save scumming the first time through. Failure and trying again is an essential part of the game's themes and tone.

After that if you do a second playthrough save scum everything because there is a LOT of things you missed the first time including probably a couple of the game's best conversations which are hidden.

I will second this, but add not to go with a 1 in any attribute for your first playthrough.

      Explanation. Very slight spoilers so:

      spoiler

There are very few ways to gate yourself out of content, but that 1 in a stat can lead to that, because if you go that route you can only raise those stats one time unless you happen upon the right thoughts, which isn't guaranteed. I personally had 1 physical and had to savescum in order to get that ice box open even with the right tool.

On that note, also make sure you heal your damage. Having damage in either of the two healthbars lowers the associated stat.

try not to reset after failure, unless you make kim feel bad
otherwise you're probably fine as long as you're willing to read a whole bunch

i can second what other people have said about Inland Empire and the PSYCHE stat block in general, it doesn't necessarily have to be your highest stat but in a first playthrough its probably not something to ignore.

any dialouge option that starts with "wait" or "hang on" won't progress the conversation, they're free clicks to get more infomation/dialogue. don't be afraid in general to pursue some of the more insane lines of thought, explore conversations, and talk to everyone.

and if you take damage on your last hit point, you can use a healing item while the point is depleting by clicking on the little plus sign above your healthbars - i got sent back to my last save a fair few times because i didn't realise that for most of the game lol

the main character did a lot of shit. like, a LOT of shit. a lot of people will tell you about shit you did. you will be given the option to apologize, nearly every time.

do not be the sorry cop.

Or be the sorry cop, if you want to. Sorry cop is a valid playstyle and there is a good-ass reason most people land on it for their first game.

I agree. A few of the tips in this thread are way too spoilery imo. I'm not the kind of person who usually cares too much about spoilers, but Disco Elysium is an exception. You just need to go in and experience it. The only ones I would say (and they've already been mentioned by ssjmarx and others) are not to be afraid of failing checks and that it's probably better if you can avoid savescumming.

I'd advise levelling up your two health stats (Endurance and Volition) to 3 or 4 just so you don't suddenly die, but it can be very funny if you don't. Otherwise go nuts, there's not really a wrong way to play the game.
