Resources For Understanding The War Beyond The Bulletins

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map, who is an independent youtuber with a mostly neutral viewpoint.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have good analysis (though also a couple bad takes here and there)

Understanding War and the Saker: neo-conservative sources but their reporting of the war (so far) seems to line up with reality better than most liberal sources.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict and, unlike most western analysts, has some degree of understanding on how war works. He is a reactionary, however.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent journalist reporting in the Ukrainian warzones.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Russian Foreign Ministry: Moscow will take Zelensky's words on preventive strikes on Russia into account when taking measures to ensure Russia's nuclear deterrence and security.

Also, apparently Starlink is having issues in Ukraine, and it's causing the Ukrainians issues on the front. Either Elon's inventions don't work (extremely plausible) or he's being catty about Ukraine insulting him. Honestly, the absolute funniest thing would be Musk deciding to pull out the satellites altogether in response to Ukrainian politicians insulting him on Twitter.

Imagine if that was the interpreted reason as to why the Ukrainians lost. God, that would be so fucking funny.

If Elon could get enough world leaders in to a Tesla then have it autopilot off a pier it would solve a lot of problems.

Then to avoid CIA/FBI assassination attempts he moves to Russia and becomes not just a citizen but a right hand man to putin.

The timing of the FT article is curious, considering Musk's tweets and all. But it also says

Some of the outages led to a “catastrophic” loss of communication in recent weeks, said one senior Ukrainian government official with direct knowledge of the issue. Many were reported as soldiers breached the frontline into Russian-controlled territory and some during pitched battles, the official said, speaking under the condition of anonymity.

The disruptions didn't happen yesterday, according to the article. So a third option is electronic warfare on the part of Russia, such as Triada 2S. Also, notably, three days days ago, Russian MOD informed that they were "conduct[ing] experiments with foreign satellites" in space, without any further details. [ x ]

It could be, just as pure speculation, that Musk began freaking out because something had started happening to his satellites, for example. Just thinking out loud. Orrr, Musk started messing with Ukrainian access to Starlink a few weeks ago:

      Musk, Sep 17 :

Starlink is meant for peaceful use only

Musk, today, responding to the FT article :

Bad reporting by FT. This article falsely claims that Starlink terminals & service were paid for, when only a small percentage have been.

This operation has cost SpaceX $80M & will exceed $100M by end of year.

As for what’s happening on the battlefield, that’s classified.

      🤷

It's all very interesting. Satellite warfare is totally beyond me and I can't imagine it's technology that any country would wanna really disclose.

I know the US and China have publicly demonstrated anti-satellite missiles. From what i remember there are missiles that can launch from aircraft, and also from ground launchers. But it sounds like Russia has, or is claiming to have, some brand new tech that can be used to attack or disrupt satellites. The analysis of this war in ten years are going to be fascinating if we survive it.
