Her iconic character Ripley from the Alien series was almost played by Meryl Streep. Apparently the casting was pretty close. Also the characters were all supposedly written without specified genders, so it was purely because they liked her performance that the character was even a woman.

That's really how most things should be. It must be hell for actresses because as they get older - roles dry up. Once they are in the 40s - people in the entertainment business start to think of them as "old". Then they a have to play moms. And after that grandmas. If unisex casting was the norm a 50 something woman could play the "son of a bitch" role where she fucks everybody over. I'd like to see that.

I watched Jeff Bridges' tv series "The Old Man". His love interest is Amy Brenneman. At one point when they are on a sort of date she takes out a small box and then she says something like "Oh, what am I doing! This is so embarrassing!" I had no idea what was happening. It turns out it's a pill case for her old people pills. In reality she's only 58 and she's 14 years younger than Bridges.

Well, every actor on TV is older than their character. Little kids are played by teenagers, teens are played by 20-somethings, 20-somethings are played by 30-somethings...
