The US "national security" position against PRC tech firms introduced under Trump hasn't gone away.

reminds me about the impetus for the first gun control law was to protect domestic industry from cheap copies and the secondary market after WW2

Reagan increased tariffs on imported motorcycles from 4.4 to 49.4 percent to keep Harley Davidson from going out of business decades ago.

It was never, ever about free trade. “Free trade” is obscurantism and only rhetorical never in practice.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/06/15/plan-strip-huawei-rural-telecoms-is-still-short-billions/

Much of rural America uses Huawei infrastructure because it’s cheaper than American made stuff. The government banned them and is forcing rural areas to switch over to American products but won’t provide the funding for it

The ban marks the culmination of years of warnings from security researchers, analysts and intelligence agencies that the Chinese government could use Chinese-made telecommunications equipment to spy on Americans.

      COULD

      Lmao

We literally have evidence of the US SPYING on the world, not that it could be spying on the world. But yes, china is the scary one.

Also why would I give a shit if China is spying on me? China has little to no control over my life. The thing I care about is MY GOVERNMENT spying on me, because they’re the ones that can kick down my door and drag me out in handcuffs

China can sell you treats which is infinitely worse than Facebook and twitter voluntarily selling data to the government

One of the more possible (though still highly unlikely) situations is IOT switches that phone home. The US made some stink about the possibility of China being able to toggle them remotely to overload circuits and explode transformers with an oscillating load.

Which immediately tells me that the US made ones being sold to other countries are absolutely capable of doing that and I should probably stick with the Chinese ones.

I checked mine and didn't see anything phoning home, the Amazon and Google ones both phone home to a server somewhere. Ostensibly for reading your account linked calendar, but it means it's absolutely available for exploitation.

Meanwhile, Biden will boast about his surgical strikes that cripple Chinese semiconductor industry, how he did so much better than Trump, and will use his “tough on China” card in an attempt to court Republican voters.

Why bother? Biden won't get credit from Republicans for increasing deportations, the wall, astronomical cop funding, hurting China, etc. That's definitely his plan, but I don't see how his approval rating benefits

does that matter? like, i think they'll just do what they always do (move right, chasing the imaginary undecided moderate fascist) and then let the chips fall where they will.

if they win, good. if they lose, good.

as long as they can prevent even the slightest left-leaning policy or talking point from emerging, they win.

They're also banning all future Hikvision products, which is the OEM for most other cheap IP/onvif cameras sold in the US. I wonder if this will apply to those as well.

I'm so glad the caring and responsible coterie of ghouls that run our lives have their priorities straight. Can you imagine being forced to live through a plague, the rise of fascism, and the collapse of the biosphere with a chinese phone??
