What's the best way to do so. I plan on pirating it all, but I've read something about movies, and director's cuts and whatnot? What's all that about?

Just watch the OG series as available. Episodes 21-24 have director's cuts which are superior and probably the only versions you'll find anyways. 25 and 26 are the original ending of the TV series. Death and Rebirth is a recap film of the series with additional content that was used for the director's cut episodes, and a bit of what would become End of Evangelion. You can skip it unless you are curious. End of Evangelion is a real beast. Easily the best part of the OG series. Episodes 25 and 26 handled the series ending in a very abstract manner. EoE opts for a much more direct portrayal and picks up directly after 24.

Please ask if you've got anymore questions

Watch an incomplete set of tapes at that one friend's house out of order and mixed with a few random DBZ and 08th MS Team episodes.

What’s the best way to do so.

Get drunk/high and watch Miyazaki films instead.

    NGE TV Show

    End of Evangelion

    Shin Godzilla

Optional: Rebuild series (which is just a retelling of Evangelion with new plot and characters). You can probably skip the first movie because it’s just the tv show condensed into a movie.

Rebuild of Evangelion is probably the best Eva content overall, but if you only watch that then you won't understand like 90% of conversations about Eva since they all revolve around the original series and movie.

Don't really agree. The show is significantly better, and the rebuilds are mostly a sort of response to the show. Also the last two rebuilds are completely incomprehensible.

Opinions are cool and I'm glad you enjoyed the Rebuilds, which were ultimately a mixed bag for me (3.33 was actually my favorite lol)

But I gotta say it: TV and End of Evangelion run fucking circles around the rebuilds imo

    The watch order is:

    1. Neon Genesis Evangelion (the 26-episode TV series)
    2. End of Evangelion (movie)

2a) Take some time to process what you've watched :shinji-screm:

    1. The Rebuild Movies, in order below

3a) Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone

3b) Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance

3c) Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo

    3d) Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time

    1. This Video

Imo, audio quality is Subs > Netflix Dub (show + EoE only) > Original Dub, but they're all fine. Don't watch "Death and Rebirth", it's a combo of IIRC the back half of the tv series and the first half of EoE.

If you find that you don't like the series after finishing EoE, you're fine to stop there and skip the Rebuilds.

Watch the series with the original 1997 dub and then watch the dubbed End of Evangelion right after episode 26. Don't read anything about the show and go in cold. That's the closest you can get to watching it as a kid in the 90s, an experience which created millions of weird little freaks all around the world.

Subs, original dubs, or Netflix dubs, they're all fine. Just watch the first 24 episodes, skip the last two and watch End of Evangelion instead. Unless you wanna see what happens when a anime runs out of funding, in which case check out the last two episodes for a laugh.

I hear the rebuilds are good, but you should watch those after watching the original+End.

, “kid pilots giant robot built by scientist-dad” stories were aimed squarely at literal children.

in the 70s yeah, but in the late 70s and 80s shows like Gundam came up that were more mature and were about the horrors of war. Though maybe the dad being evil was a new element, I'm not sure on that

You yell "shinji get in the damn robit" and when he do you stand and clap then turn into fanta.
