"For them to go backwards and not cast another [actor of color] kind of sucks," Leguizamo, who starred in the 1993 live-action version, of the upcoming animated movie.

John Leguizamo is saying mamma mia to the new “Super Mario Bros.” casting.

Back when the original Mario movie came out, Hollywood was widely considered the peak form of culture. It made sense for a quality brand to reach for blockbuster status, and it was fine if they overreached and made a bad film. Nowadays Hollywood doesn't have the cultural cache is used to, and frankly it feels like Nintendo is stepping down by making a kids CGI movie. It's fine for a trashy brand like Sonic, but Mario is supposed to be above this sort of thing - it's like if Nintendo released a Mario sex toy.

Mario is above nothing and was always targeted at kids. This is like complaining about Scooby Doo making a kids movie

Mario is incredibly popular, but it's also very shallow (at least as far as most people know it). Kind of reminds me of the time Hollywood tried to adapt Tetris and that didn't go so great.

The real joy of Mario is playing it as a child (I've never met anyone who really likes Mario who got into it as an adult) and I'm not sure if that translates at all into a movie for all audiences.

They bought it to squash it, which is precisely what I'm talking about. Generally speaking, Nintendo cares about protecting their brand - although not from trashy mobile games or mid children's movies, apparently.
