This is like getting mad at people for making fanart.

Nobody makes money from this. It's nerds making an interactive equivalent of fanart because they love your work.

    God fucking damn it.

I'm going to pirate even more to spite these motherfuckers.

Love developers and artists that make these games, hate the companies that employ them

Nintendo seems to want to make sure that nobody can make a funny meme with their characters ever again, huh?

I mean they're just doing what nintendo tells them to. I place most of the blame on Nintendo (leadership) itself.

… they could just not do what Nintendo tells them to? I have a hard time believing a Nintendo lawyer wouldn’t be able to find other employment

Every company is like this. Maybe not to the same degree, but to some degree

Lawyers could just all agree not to do it and then the companies couldn't do anything but accept it. What are they gonna do? Not hire lawyers?

I need someone to sue them to occupy their make-work lawyer team.

This might not actually be Nintendo, see: https://old.reddit.com/r/gmod/comments/1c5u051/aaron_peters_the_destroyer_of_addons/

    Edit: Nope it’s legit: https://twitter.com/garrynewman/status/1783501547361411494

without wanting to sound like a nintendo apologist here (steal their games as much as you can, i certainly do): i don't really give a shit. not everything needs to be turned into popcultural slurry all the time. that's how you get fortnite.

just make something original if you want to make something, it's not that fucking hard

A game built around giving players absolute power to mod anything they want is going to by definition contain a pop cultural slurry.

Fortnite isn't even close to Gmod. Gmod's assets are built and maintained by the community, not a fucking multi-national corporation trying to such as much money from children as possible.

I don't know how G-Mod works, but is there like some central repository of maps and characters, or can anyone just download these from wherever and add them to the game?

The Steam Workshop is the easiest way to do it and that's the site they targeted - but it's not the only one, Nexus has a GMod page, so does gamebanana, gmodstore, mod db... it would be a lot of work to keep all Nintendo IP off of every single mod platform.

Gamebanana in particular stands out because they still host a lot of mods for Switch games, so they're thumbing their nose at Nintendo already.
