I'm not 100% sure, but a thought that immediately comes to mind: It's a power fantasy (and who doesn't love one of those) that involves a whole community of engineers, mechanics and other assorted support staff, which makes it less fascist than other power fantasies about like, superheros or whatever, in which one individual is just objectively superhuman and superior to others.
Scrappy Garage Teams are my favorite parts of a mech series. Nothing I love more than someone eho cares more about my giant robot because they built/rebuild it on the regular
I remember noticing this when I first watched Evangelion. I hadn't watched much mecha stuff but I was amazed at the effort I was seeing put into showing just how many people were involved in getting them moving.
The more fucked up a planet becomes, the better its people get at building big fuck off robots to fight over the scraps.
i remember playing armored core and having a bunch of vertical missile packs that just fucked my brother up and made him so mad
