For real, the difference between professional captioning and a freelancer who's paid pennies on the word/minute (of film) is night and day. In particular its becime abundantly clear that HBO's criterion collection is captioned by the latter. You have all these absolute classics, but anything in A Bit Of An Accent is "unintelligible." Its like so obnoxiously racist classist etc who doesn't even get an attempt at a caption, too. Really pisses me off.

I can imagine that this will only be compounded by our current false dawn of AI. I can imagine audio described content being similarly ruined.

Oh and court stenography too, which is will probably end up having some “interesting” consequences.

YouTube already auto generates captions and if you (the video uploader) do manual captions you're considered a saint. Probably a decent look into the near future but for all A/V content

I'm still mad they got rid of free community captions.

Sometimes words are left out of captions and it feels like it's for the sake of brevity, but it ends up taking away some of the emphasis or context. I'm lucky to be able to hear, but it sucks when you can tell there's missing nuance for people that need captions.

I did captioning for a while when I was trapped in the gig economy, fucking sucked. And since you get what you pay for, so did the quality of my captioning.

No, they just had a one page guide and basic formatting rules to follow. I read the page, clicked the agreement, and produced some of the most terrible work that they'd still take. I think it was literally a cent per word or something like that.

I haven't been able to find any English-language information about laws or requirements, but every single bit of Chinese media I've ever seen has captions baked in.
