It’s not a recent thing I’ve noticed or anything. But throughout the years I’ve seen a few people saying periods aren’t gross or correcting themselves after saying it is. I’m curious if this is supposed to be the ‘expected’ sentiment these days.

Now, I don’t think periods are some uniquely gross phenomenon or anything that needs to be pointed out and scrutinized like a 12 year old boy. I just view it the same as pissing or shitting. I mean, after all, it’s blood leaving your body.

I don’t know if the functions are the same as piss and shit or anything (I.e. getting rid of toxic waste - I never got any sex ed), but I just don’t like seeing body fluids at all. Of course, I’m not going to be “that guy” who runs away whenever someone says they’re on their period or asks for help (:Bwaaa:), I just wouldn’t pretend like it’s not a gross situation.

Unlike pissing and shitting, periods have been used as an excuse to abuse women in many cultures, so it's a touchy subject

yeah i don't want any of those substances on me or my toilet seat either but there's no reason to be weirder about period discharge than a nosebleed unless you care more about your couch cushions than a person and if somebody here is like that they should leave forever.

Non period haver, but can't there be little clumps and clots from the uterine lining and all that? I could see someone being justifiably more grossed out by that compared to just basic liquid blood

Totally ignoring the rest of this,

I don’t know if the functions are the same as piss and shit or anything (I.e. getting rid of toxic waste - I never got any sex ed)

Maybe you should Google what periods are

When people say it isn't gross, they mean it's normal like pissing and shitting so don't be fucking weird because everyone pisses and shits.

it's exactly like that. Pissing and shitting is normal but also gross. People should not be shamed for pissing and shitting.

periods are the uterine walls breaking down because the person didn't get pregnant and it's the end of their menstral cycle.

the stigma over women having them is really nasty and dehumanising but no one expects you not to find the blood itself gross

Everything about the human body gets more disgusting the closer you look

I don't find it particularly gross, but it's perfectly normal not to want to be in contact with blood or interact with dirty menstrual hygiene items. But that shouldn't extend to people on their periods or the associated items in general.

Oh and don't freak out and get disgusted if you're fucking and someone starts bleeding. Just deal with it and move on.

Just keep it to yourself tbh. Folks who menstruate shouldn't have to be made to feel gross about a normal bodily function that's out of their control. That time of the month is already vulnerable enough for us.

There are already a lot of good answers here, so I'll just add that a lot of girls are pretty young when they start (I was 11) and kids can be pretty immature about body stuff (she's bleeding out of her VAGINA omg) and that can cause baggage. Imagine you're in elementary school and you need to supply yourself with enough menstrual products to get through the day. At least when I was that age, my friends and I were kind of scared of tampons (what if I can't get it out????), so we stuck to pads, which were bulkier then. You can't fit enough in your pockets to get you through day, so you have a couple options. It is essential that you not openly carry a pad from your backpack to the restroom, because then kids will know that you're BLEEDING from your VAGINA omg. This must be hidden. You can carry a purse in addition to your backpack. This was the norm for my elementary school. Girls started carrying purses when they needed a bag they could grab and take in the restroom with them. You can also keep pads in your backpack, but then you also need to be stealthy about getting them from the backpack to the restroom. Some girls kept a small bag, like a makeup bag, in their backpacks with tampons in them. I'm not sure how old I was when I became comfortable with just openly walking towards the restroom with a tampon in my hand, but it definitely took a while. So when people say "periods aren't gross," they don't mean that dealing with a period isn't messy. They're saying that it's normal and not something to be ashamed of.

true but everything short of shedding your corporeal form and existing as a being of pure energy is gross tbh

It bothers me too, but yeah there's some historical baggage to it that I would be conscious of when dealing with the subject since I don't want to discriminate or make someone feel bad because of a natural process of their body. Patriarchal norms have taught us to treat women's bodies differently from men's but I wouldn't overcorrect by being like "it's actually delicious abolish tampons" either.

There's a similar thing with queefing, where it's like - yeah that's gross, but sometimes it's funny, and if you treat it differently from a fart then that's a bad double-standard that you have to get rid of.

It's not about whether you find it gross, it's how you respond.

Cum is gross but plenty of people eat cum.
