I've had a hypothesis for a while that video game movies turn out so weird because they weren't what the producers initially wanted to do. Like the Mario Bros movie's directors wanted to make a cyberpunk Blade Runner movie, but instead got handed an adaptation.
Mortal Kombat was probably different, which is why it's closer to the source material.

But that adaptation turned out to be amazing.
They somehow made a cyberpunk alternate reality dinosaur movie but managed to incorporate so many elements from the games that it's silly, from bombombs to mushrooms to those Super Nintendo light guns.
Oh yeah, they actually made an interesting movie, but it probably wasn't what they wanted to make in their hearts.

To be fair, in this case it's probably at least partially coming out of people considering animation to not be "true cinéma" (pronounce "cinema" in your mind in the most pretentious manner possible). I swear, every time there's a /r/fantasy thread about an adaptation of something there's somehow always a bunch of people crawling out of the woodworks going ":wojak-nooo: nooo you can't adapt this totally mature and highly original work as an animated series, that's children's entertainment!"

Arcane was absolutely one of the best animated series I've ever seen. The new animated mortal combat movies are decent slop, and the live action was one was just plane fun. Looking forward to watching Last of Us but I'll wait till the whole season is out first, so now I gotta dodge spoilers for the next however many weeks but I hate waiting between episodes.
Yea but those are in successive orders of legitimate media. Anime < Animation < Live Action. The next step is a highly successful film franchise, which honestly Uncharted might put that dub on the board
