tl;dr: capeshit/MCU/nerds/streaming killed sex in movie theaters.

I for one am fine with sex in entertainment, especially when it's meaningful and relevant to the story's intentions.

Sexual violence on the other hand, no matter the excuses for "historical accuracy" or whatever, doesn't need full frontal spectacle to be part of a story and when it's there it's generally a cheap redundant exploitative gimmick.

        I didn't watch the video, I admit. :zizek-joy:

films that have good romantic subplots where the sex scenes are meant to be cathartic rewards for the characters and audience

Especially if the audience is already aware this is going to happen at some point (the rating system is a good thing here, especially if it actually states what content is in there), that beats the Netflix standard of "let's jump cut to something generically shocking and gratuitous :awooga: :libertarian-alert: :hypersus: " that I put up with but am certainly irritated by when I'm otherwise enjoying the story and then, for example, "oh, of course there's a jump cut to a gory torture scene" that I never asked for, didn't want, and should have expected.

but some people here seem to view all sex scenes as just vulgar displays meant to titillate audiences

Some comrades are :hexbear-asexual: and deserve to be heard too. It's very uncomfortable for them to have to sit through sex scenes (or oversexualized advertising for that matter) if they didn't necessarily sign on for it.

Really there should just be better Content Warnings and more media for Ace people.

            No arguments here.

I’m a big fan of the film Call me By Your Name, which sexuality is a BIG part of

If it was presented in a way where the audience knows what they're getting into, that's great.

My problem is when Netflix jump cuts to :awooga: :libertarian-alert: :hypersus: without warning (except the assumption that Netflix shows are going to do that as a general gimmick) for sheer gimmick purposes and to be "mature" in a show where it didn't really matter and didn't add anything of value to besides :awooga: :libertarian-alert: :hypersus: for its own sake.

Every trailer I saw of the film made it pretty clear there was going to be some gay fucking in the film.

Sounds like Brokeback Mountain. Which is a good thing. :order-of-lenin:

I haven’t seen a Netflix show that had THAT blatant of a jump cut to sex, idk if you have any examples.

Most were highly forgettable crime/mystery shows that were a blur to me so I don't remember their names, unfortunately. I stopped browsing that genre entirely because that gimmick (in particular gore/torture in an otherwise quippy quirky presentation) was tiresome in all its forms.

Freaking Star Trek Discovery did that too, both gory violence and sexual violence for its own sake, where it generally does nothing and almost no fan asked for it.

If I was too quick on the editing again I mentioned Star Trek Discovery which has some seriously out of left field torture, gory violence, and sexual violence moments.

It wasn't true crime, as far as I know. It was fiction and made no pretensions being true stories.

I think the only scene that made sense involving sexual violence was in the sopranos. It served to demonstrate whether the only good character, the victim, should use her mob connection to exact revenge on her rapist. It wasn’t an easy watch but it was at least used to put yourself in her shoes of the decision to kill the rapist or not.
