tl;dr: capeshit/MCU/nerds/streaming killed sex in movie theaters.
:geordi-no: Gratuitous sex scenes to put asses in seats
:geordi-yes: Wholesome romance where the mute lady boning a fish dude is the entire point of the movie
american puritanism is truly baffling, decapitating someone and then saying a one-liner is well-adjusted shit but god forbid someone see a breast
edit: remember that anything queer also gets put, meritlessly, into the "sexual" category
I'd be down with more intimacy and romance and consensual sex scenes between adults enjoying it.
The outlet of P R E S T I G E T V being as violent and edgy a spectacle as possible is a sort of puritianism with extra steps; it's saying that if there's sex it may as well be as violent as possible.
It's a continuation of having sex scenes in old horror movies so people could be titillated by the sex, then, idk, have their god bothering reaffirmed when the monster murders the teen sex havers.

It's the justification of Puritanism. Gotta be pure or you're a god less sinner with no control
I liked the brutal decapitation scene and the following "this brought us no satisfaction or closure" scenes, the first 10 minutes of endgame were great, right until Ant-Man appeared and ruined the movie
Because a whole generation of people including myself all accidentally watched Ninja Scroll with their mom. Collectively we decided to try to spare the rest of you any similar awkward embarrassment of abrupt graphic sexual content while you're just trying to watch a movie with your friends or family.
Part of why I hate visiting my parents is that they always have netflix on, and for some reason netflix shows love to jump-cut to graphic fuck scenes, so I'll be there with my elderly mom and dad, and suddenly the characters on TV are rimming each other really loudly or whatever. It's just uncomfortable, y'know?
yeah people want to watch movies and tv with their family. I don't miss sex scenes
I don't miss sex scenes, but I do miss romantic subplots. I think the latest generation of Hollywood reexamining all of the bad "romantic" tropes in movies fell short because while they did finally learn that damsels in distress and trophy characters were bad, they failed to come up with something to replace them with, and now every male-female dynamic in pop films is either a preestablished relationship or something seemingly completely platonic (and in some cases it's both, like in Iron Man where he has no sexual tension with his assistant outside of a couple snarky asides but then they apparently get married and have a daughter in between films).
Firstly, This is bull. There is a ton of sex in movies. Just not in most capeshit because those are all ages superhero movies.
Secondly, there is nothing more awkward than watching people fuck when you're not watching porn. Especially when you're watching a movie with your family or whatever. Plus sex scenes usually offer nothing that isn't already implied and they grind the movie to a halt. Netflix has this problem out the ass if you want to see why this is bad. Fucking and gore for no reason other then shock the viewer for cheap maturity clout.
I feel like people confuse sex for a more ambient, lowkey sort of horniness. A sense of being lived in. The issue isn't that movies are literally sexless, it's that they're figuratively sexless. Everyone's conventionally attractive, but in a sterile, lifeless way.
This is the source of many, many, MANY of our cultural neuroses. I blame the fact that a lot of old school American doctors and social leaders thought any sort of excitement was either physically bad or spiritually bad
That’s like the whole point of the film.
It's too bad that point missed the mark for a lot of chuds. I know some of those chuds personally... including those that had no economic pressure to sign on with the military but wanted to "kill some bugs" while citing that movie as their inspiration to do so. :doomer:
I don't think anyone got it in 1997. I think it was like 2006 when i first saw people being like "holy shit the dumb action movie was actually really smart!"
Yeah, people don't need to fuck but it can be appropriate for a character to avoid making it seem like they don't know what sex even is and frankly aren't interested in finding out.
Especially when you’re watching a movie with your family or whatever.
When I was 15, I went to see The Wolf of Wall Street with my mom thinking it was going to be some sort of serious docudrama about shady stock brokers. Worst theater experience of my life.
When I was 15, I went to see The Wolf of Wall Street with my mom
Holy shit I'm so fucking old
The wolf of wall street was released 10 years ago, there's a good chance the person you're responding to is in their mid 20s/around 25 years now old lmao.
I would know because I'm also a similar age, sorry for making you feel old
It's okay, when you're an old like us it's a feeling that happens a lot anyway. If it wasn't you it would be walking into a room with no idea what you were looking for, realising an album you just bought is now playing on a retro station, or looking at the date of literally anything.
:chomsky-yes-honey:
I know some world class chuds that got a depressingly bad takeaway message from that movie. :grillman:
I strongly dislike the "if you don't want a sex scene in every possible movie you're a puritan scold" attitude that some people on Hexbear have.
To me, it's the difference between someone that wants to end the drug war and wants to legalize most recreational drugs, and a "JUST DO DMT BRO DONT BE A (misogynistic slur) BRO" Joe Roganite.
watching people fuck
I mean, selling sex is about much more than just people literally fucking. These movies are just not interested in that. It's enough for most audiences that the actors stand there dehydrated, looking pretty.
I think I heard someone once describe it as "Sex doesn't sell, porn sells." Which seems to track well with your comment. The MCU being popular despite not being completely focused on being horny doesn't mean the public is completely done with horny.
Yeah nothing quite like watching Gomez Addams have prison sex in “Kiss of the Spider Woman” with your parents.
Secondly, there is nothing more awkward than watching people fuck when you’re not watching porn.
american moment
Thank God somebody is finally asking why there isn't more sex in children's movies
This has never been even remotely true. Just because a thoroughly babyfied generation of adults can't imagine consuming media for adults doesn't mean that media isn't there. It just means we've normalized grown-ups primarily watching children's movies and reading YA novels
Weird, I wonder if anyone wrote about the tendency for production to concentrate like this :thinkin-lenin:
Because most media for adults now is boring, soulless, gritty and depressing bullshit. People get that shit all day at work.
I dislike labeling things as "for adults" and "for kids". It's limiting and takes the magic out of life. Most things "for adults" are immature in a different way that bugs me.
It just comes across as desperately trying too hard to be taken seriously.
Adults finally embracing whimsy is one of the only good things about modern media. That doesn't make them baby brained, it makes them honest.
I especially hate the condescending "this entertainment is for babies" (their word choice) attitude if something isn't Gambo.
Most things “for adults” are immature in a different way that bugs me.
"Mature" big budget "prestige" entertainment would have been marketed directly toward horny teenagers decades ago.
Can we maybe make the occasional adult film that has some risque shit in it now and again?
I'd be down for some of those if I could be sure they weren't made by creeps like David Cage.
His nonconsensual creeping on pre-transition Elliot Page, up to and including (CW: sex pest creeping)
spoiler
fabricating pornography of him and showing it to party guests
is downright disturbing.
He's insufferable and always has been. Check out this example.

Did they have one in eternals and that made every :soypoint-1: cum their pants at the theater
Chris Hemsworth goes full bare ass nude for the purpose of eye candy in one of the Thor movies
I for one am fine with sex in entertainment, especially when it's meaningful and relevant to the story's intentions.
Sexual violence on the other hand, no matter the excuses for "historical accuracy" or whatever, doesn't need full frontal spectacle to be part of a story and when it's there it's generally a cheap redundant exploitative gimmick.
I didn't watch the video, I admit. :zizek-joy:
films that have good romantic subplots where the sex scenes are meant to be cathartic rewards for the characters and audience
Especially if the audience is already aware this is going to happen at some point (the rating system is a good thing here, especially if it actually states what content is in there), that beats the Netflix standard of "let's jump cut to something generically shocking and gratuitous :awooga: :libertarian-alert: :hypersus: " that I put up with but am certainly irritated by when I'm otherwise enjoying the story and then, for example, "oh, of course there's a jump cut to a gory torture scene" that I never asked for, didn't want, and should have expected.
but some people here seem to view all sex scenes as just vulgar displays meant to titillate audiences
Some comrades are :hexbear-asexual: and deserve to be heard too. It's very uncomfortable for them to have to sit through sex scenes (or oversexualized advertising for that matter) if they didn't necessarily sign on for it.
Really there should just be better Content Warnings and more media for Ace people.
No arguments here.
I’m a big fan of the film Call me By Your Name, which sexuality is a BIG part of
If it was presented in a way where the audience knows what they're getting into, that's great.
My problem is when Netflix jump cuts to :awooga: :libertarian-alert: :hypersus: without warning (except the assumption that Netflix shows are going to do that as a general gimmick) for sheer gimmick purposes and to be "mature" in a show where it didn't really matter and didn't add anything of value to besides :awooga: :libertarian-alert: :hypersus: for its own sake.
Every trailer I saw of the film made it pretty clear there was going to be some gay fucking in the film.
Sounds like Brokeback Mountain. Which is a good thing. :order-of-lenin:
I haven’t seen a Netflix show that had THAT blatant of a jump cut to sex, idk if you have any examples.
Most were highly forgettable crime/mystery shows that were a blur to me so I don't remember their names, unfortunately. I stopped browsing that genre entirely because that gimmick (in particular gore/torture in an otherwise quippy quirky presentation) was tiresome in all its forms.
Freaking Star Trek Discovery did that too, both gory violence and sexual violence for its own sake, where it generally does nothing and almost no fan asked for it.
If I was too quick on the editing again I mentioned Star Trek Discovery which has some seriously out of left field torture, gory violence, and sexual violence moments.
It wasn't true crime, as far as I know. It was fiction and made no pretensions being true stories.
I think the only scene that made sense involving sexual violence was in the sopranos. It served to demonstrate whether the only good character, the victim, should use her mob connection to exact revenge on her rapist. It wasn’t an easy watch but it was at least used to put yourself in her shoes of the decision to kill the rapist or not.
Most sex scenes are just terribly shot and boring. But the redditor mindset of “things need to always progress the story” is lame
It's possible for it to be a fine fit and not directly part of the main plot. That's different than the Netflix style jump cut to :awooga:
because then we can pretend we have a gay couple in our film by just giving then a 10 frame gesture that can be removed for "international audiences"
Before one of them dies for some reason because then the audience doesn't have to put up with gay people continuing to be gay together. :capitalist-woke:
or (i assume) nameless background characters with (i assume) no lines kissing in the background, in the jj abrams star wars travesty.
I remember when people hated tacked on romances and sex scenes
I still do :I-was-saying:
I'm perfectly fine with sex scenes that don't feel tacked on and are relevant to a story and its characters.
the RLM guys still complain about shallow romances in films that exist solely to ensure the audience knows the male protagonist has a case of the not-gays
Recently even romance seems to have died out. Disney and marvel movies don't have a male and female character who inevitability end up together despite a complete lack of chemistry anymore
I am of two minds on this. On the one hand not every movie needs a sex scene and I have seen more movies that could have done without. I dunno if Hollywood can do sex scenes well. It needs to be at least little silly or a little dirty. Either of which requires a level of artistry that I don't trust studio's to put in. I have been watching a bunch of old Mexican movies lately and it is really refreshing to it done differently
Please, for the love of god, stop asking for sex treats in your Disney slop. Just watch better stuff if you care. You're not gunna' make shitty Marvel movies your uncles watches better, you're going to make sex and sex politics worse.
If I have a girlfriend literally ever ask me to do something she saw in an Avengers film I'm holding all you pseudos responsible and I will become an avenger of my own against this tragedy.
I only guess I really care about it in the field of Star Wars. The conception of romance and the themes of exploration, adventure and rebellion are tied together in my head pretty strongly.
The OT had a lot of sexuality in its undertones. I don't think it was necessarily written into it and I'm far from the first person to mention it. The other movies lack that because they lack any humanity at all. Also you had Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher's chemistry which really brings it all home. To notice that potential in two actors and to work with it requires being anyone but George Lucas or Disney's product line.
The OT was pretty nice in this field to me honestly, I dont really want like a sex scene or anything, just romance! I want the characters to be fully realized, and that means romantic intentions and gestures, Luke and Han have great tension with Leia right at the beginning of Episode 5. I guess I'm also the odd one out when I say that the Anakin and Padme scenes are probably the best or at least the most stand out thing from Episode 2, even with all the stilted performances and dialogue, I think it does a pretty good job portraying 2 emotionally stunted individuals finding some commonality with each other.
This applies to everything wrong with Star Wars and also some stuff that is totally fine but fuck it, Andor is better.
Andor felt like it did the sex stuff wrong, Or at least had it in the wrong places with characters with zero chemistry.
The couple at the beginning was pretty lifeless. Andor scoring babes at the vacation planet is basically a cut away and isnt consistent with his character The lesbian couple hate each other and dont even demonstrate any love from what I remember and are in the process of breaking up (cool I guess, but not for ancillary characters?)
And finally the one that would have made me laugh and seemed most appropriate was the imperial freaks at the end should have immediately gone at each other, but that tension in that scene melts away to nothing.
I feel like I interpreted each one of those things differently
Bix and Timm was awkward because Timm was hiding a major secret
Let Andor be a little slutty. And also he has intense chemistry with Bix and Brasso
The lesbian couple don't hate each other, they love each other and they want their lives to have different trajectories, and that's causing tension
The sexual tension in the Dedra Incel boy scene was present, but entirely within Syril Carn's head
I'm glad sex "no longer sells" in Hollywood. Most of that shit was gross and sexist anyway
