Jake gets possessed by a Yeerk alien, and the Animorphs are forced to starve it out. With a dying slug in his brain, Jake finds himself in a state between alive and dead, and himself starring face-to-face with Space Satan.
I remember this very vividly.
I'm somewhat tempted to get back into reading them again, especially as I'm older and can understand the themes now (back then I enjoyed it cause it was dark, violent and had aliens in it)
I'm cishet, never read her books, but something about this almost made me cry. Really wholesome.

Came here to post this, i've never seen any trace of genuine joy on JKR's face. The most she can mange is smug satisfaction when she's with her fellow terf brownshirts.
As a kid, there were just too fucking many books. I didn't know what oder to read in.
I usually read them in whatever order I bought them in; it was an exciting way to get pulled into the middle of a more developed point in time with 'mysterious' new characters that I would find out the backstories of later in time as though I was reading a prequel (my foray into DBZ was the same; my first DBZ experience was the first Broly movie and I had zero idea what Saiyans were, or what was up with the cool transformations or that Vegeta was a prince, all I knew was that coolness was happening and I could find out the context later)
I was 8 when dbz first aired in English and wasn't really a fan. It did make all my classmates wanna fight all the time hut also suck at it tho, so I got in a lot trouble for making a kid cry whondecided he was vegeta thst recess and thought a series of really fast but not really actual punches worked and was going around doing that to people. Dbz sucks
I recommend Everworld if you want some KA Applegate YA slop, It was overshadowed by Animorphs, but damn it was good.
It was such a fun mix of mythological fantasy, sci-fi, and cosmic horror
