i know his characterization denigrates eastern european/south asian culture, but borat is the perfect heel to expose american xenophobia

Couldn't agree more... he leans hard into stereotypes, and even makes stuff up, to let Americans (and others) reveal themselves. Its like red meat somehow.

I never look at his characterizations and think "man these Khazaks are fucked up" because we all know he's playing a part, but the people he gets to take their mask off definitely aren't.

i know jack shit about khazaks and im pretty sure that he doesnt know jack either. I think like 90% of the act is him just being jewish while not actually saying hes jewish to bait out like deep-rooted anti-semtism and racism from people. like apparently whenever hes speaking "khazak" its actually just hebrew, and he even throws in hebrew slang like "wah wah wee wah"

How does being Jewish play into exposing peoples' antisemitism when he starts it himself? Like idk if I'm remembering this correctly but I thought the guy in Texas that talked about hunting Jews in Borat said that cause Borat's antisemitism made him think he was in good company.

I mean when he’s just going off about Jews, it obviously wouldn’t, but like just being vaguely middle eastern is probably good enough for some people.

They filmed the original in Romania actually, there was a whole controversy about it cause they didnt actually tell the people in that village what was really going on and didnt pay them much so they sued the movie studio. I'm Romanian, i dont really find even that part of it offensive, its kinda the point of the movie i feel like

I don't find the fictionalization of it offensive, but it's fucked up because of what you said: they didn't tell them and they didn't pay them. I hate that part of the movie because of it
