:thonk: well if it's about yaoi, I'd concur. That's mostly porn made by and for women. But if they wanna take away the BL?

Yaoi specifically refers to parody stories and isn't used in the professional BL industry. But that's irrelevant considering that the OP of the twitter post is referring to all asian MLM stories as 'yaoi', and calling tame shit like Patalliro! pornographic :what-the-hell:

I know. I'm talking about the industry, the publishers of yaoi. It's produced for a female demographic. With porn there's more independent creators/doujinshi, that are made by queer men. I'm sure all sorts of people consume it

I don't get this idea, yaoi is great. idgaf if it's made by women, I enjoy it either way.

Again, it's cool that gay men read it. I'm just saying the majority is made by women. And with women in mind. The majority of BL consumers are women. The supply side of this graph has women in mind.

My issue with that is that heteronormativity is commonplace, though obviously there's plenty that doesn't apply to. The second issue is the common fetishisation of gay men — ofc you can still enjoy it, I'm not forbidding you from having that emotional response, I personally don't like it.

Compare it to lesbian porn. Most of it is made for straight men, by straight men, with the male gaze. Lesbians can still enjoy it. But if I was a lesbian I'd prefer lesbian porn made by and for lesbians. That's where I stand on BL. :shrug-outta-hecks:

It should be noted that the reason why BL started as a women's demographic is because it's an offshoot from shoujo romance manga, with the assumption that only girls wanted to read romance stories, and that boys only wanted action and fanservice. I think comparing it to lesbian porn is unfair if only for the fact that BL as a genre isn't really intended purely for titillation (though even if it was, I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with that as long as real gay men aren't objectified and are treated respectfully).

Thankfully, there are more and more male and nonbinary BL authors nowadays, and demographics are merging with sub-genres like gachimuchi BL, or series with gay romantic couples in general magazines marketed towards boys and men. There are also many geicomi artists that sometimes write for BL and BL-leaning magazines, such as Tsukasa Matsuzaki (who unfortunately passed away due to COVID), and Gengoroh Tagame.

Anyway, I'm not kidding when I say that Nitro+Chiral games and BL-adjacent stories like Banana Fish radicalised me away from liberalism and actually got me reading theory.

I can't wait to be part of the Marxist-Leninist-Yaoist split after the successful communist revolution
