I clicked on it, had a little chuckle, and haven't thought about it again until now.

    Don't care.

Right, so here's the image in question. I'm sorry, but is this really that sexualized? Their body proportions seem pretty normal to me, they're dressed in totally normal clothes, and the artist is a Brazilian woman who seems to have leftist views. Obviously it's a good idea not to have creepy shit on the site, but you don't want to go too far the other way and wind up as a "leftist" version of a hectoring conservative screaming that women should cover themselves up.

They just look cute to me? Idk maybe I'm super naive and missing some context. I also didn't see the original thread or the comments, just looking at the photo

I suppose it's my bad for not clarifying. I meant more that the people on the site oversexualize them. Although, they are all suffering from anime girl-itis with the weird blush thing going on which is a bit of a hallmark in anime lewdness.

I hesitate to go into detail but I would not say that the average person attains bodies like the ones in the drawing. Yeah, it's illustrated so there's obviously stylistic elements, but the breast to waistline ratio is definitely weighted in the direction of 'more breast, less waist', which tends to be the case in unrealistic representations of women.

I saw the picture but I didn't look too closely at the comments, so maybe there were creepy ones that I missed. And these women are drawn to be more attractive than average, sure, but not insanely so, especially in the context of anime-style art. I see women that basically look like this every day on the street. I mean, this is so mild as far as sexualization goes. This is maybe 10% as sexualized as, like, an underwear ad you'd see on the subway.

I definitely don't want this site to have a bunch of posts and comments that are like "I'm HORNY, and here's the HOT HENTAI that I'm JACKING OFF TO!!!" But at the same time, I don't want it to be so policed that it feels like we're in the school where the principal got fired for showing teenagers Michelangelo's David because the parents thought it was pornographic.

the weird blush thing going on

That's sex flush, the reddening of the face and chest that happens when a woman is sexually aroused. The lighter the skin tone, the more noticeable it is. It's part of the sexual response cycle. It occurs together with the hardening of nipples, increased flow of blood to the genitals, and the vagina lubricating itself. Some of these artists, being total nerds, intensely studied biology and discovered this (it sure as hell wasn't by personal experience!) and it became a cliche. Now half the artists just draw it and don't even know what it means, just that girls are supposed to be blushing all the time. I bet a significant portion of the audience thinks it's from embarrassment. But yeah, it means the girl in the drawing is experiencing sexual arousal, probably because the viewer is looking at her and he's turning her on. (echhhhhh) :soviet-bottom:

That may be the case for much of anime in general, but there's nothing in this particular image, just taken on its own, to say it's the sex flush. It certainly doesn't require the artist to have an understanding of physiology, even if their style is influenced by the entirety of anime in general (and how could it not be?). First of all, the only part of these women's skin that's really visible and would also flush is their face, same as a blush, and like you mentioned, the sex flush tends to include the chest but also other parts of the body, even the hands and soles of the feet. You can't differentiate a flush and a regular blush from just the face. In fact, you can't even really differentiate unless you have seen the same person in both circumstances because different people flush and blush in different ways. The sex flush tends to be more extensive sure, but plenty of people blush on their whole face and some people flush just a little bit on their cheeks. But all of that is immaterial because they are also clearly wearing makeup like eyeliner so there's no reason not to think they're wearing, you know... blush as well. Also, the sex flush doesn't just occur in women by the way, it's just a bit more likely than it is in men.

I don't want this comment to be taken as a "well ackshually" kind of thing, but I'm making it because some people in these threads have been cherry picking things that might seem sexually suggestive to them and using that as evidence that this image is sexualizing the subjects in it. But all it really is is a drawing of conventionally attractive women. That's it. I am all for having a strict rule against any horny posting, but this ain't that.

Ah, gotcha- so the standard here is that women can dress and look however they want to in real life and policing that in any way is misogynistic, but also that depicting women in art dressing in totally normal clothes should be policed and removed from the site. It's totally okay for women to dress like that in real life, but not okay for an artist, even a female artist, to draw them dressed like that. This makes perfect sense.

I scrolled for about 2 seconds before finding lesbian bowser dominatrix smut, but yeah, a fair bit of it is also quite tame.

You don't think they're unrealistic? I don't want to go into specifics but I would say they're all a lot curvier than what you'd see day to day. And they've all got that anime blush thing going on. I don't know. I just think as a pool of 5 people there's not a lot of bodily diversity there.

Yes it was problematic. This can only be resolved by Hexbear adopting the Wahabist Interpretation of Sharia and banning all depictions of women who are not modestly dressed in a niqab.

I’m not being a puritanical leftist here am I?

yes you are. 5 dressed cartoons just, posing is not suggestive. explicit comments should be/were removed but an artist drawing attractive people is their prerogative

Sure, but it is by an artist that draws bowser porn so, there's that.

Explicit comments did get removed but they happened in the first place and in that time I would say the site revealed itself as having a tendency towards people who felt comfortable making public sexual comments about women.

Hey, maybe all the women I know are also puritan or also have a (not unfounded) stigma against anime content and it's associations, but I'm pretty sure that it would be taken as perverse to engage with images like this in those circles.

      I guess I'll just ask.

that bowser one isn't porn but is in fact suggestive, no need to exaggerate

problematic comments getting removed seems like evidence of a problem getting dealt with. or does this site culture have a deep-seated 'tendency' toward reactionary ideas every time we ban a wrecker?

and why do you get to attach all the cultural baggage of the japanese animation industry to an independent brazilian artist who just has an anime adjacent style?

i...don't really see what was horny about it? i especially don't see what aspect of it qualifies as "needless sexualization", nor can i really agree that they have ridiculous proportions. they just look like cute, drawn women.

sure, the reaction was a little more :bottom-speak: than i'd prefer but i can't find any real issue with the art itself from a horny perspective.

Take a look at my other comments. I did my best to explain it there. I think I'm also just biased against anime stuff so I blamed the art rather than those who 'consumed' the art for the horniness.

yeah my b, your comments didn't show up until i posted and refreshed. i can sort of see what you're saying about the proportions if i look at it with that specific criticism in mind, but i don't personally think it makes the jump to objectification. i guess a good point of comparison would be the horny art posted by the same creator, which has the noticeable feel of porn (despite not being explicit). i can see what you mean about the anime blush but to my eyes it comes off more as a moe-blob "cute blush" than a "i am here to fuck" flush.

i'm all too happy to admit there is a certain undercurrent of...let's call it soft misogyny here on hexbear. lots of "it's fine to sexualize someone if i want them to dominate me" behavior and similar. but yeah tl;dr i think it's a viewership problem rather than an artist problem.

why the hell do people think brics is a leftist organization. 1/5 countries is leftist. it's arguably not even an organization, it's just five countries that hold an economic diplomatic summit because 20 years ago a goldman sachs economist identified them as growth economies for the purpose of selling speculative investment packages to americans.

i'm gonna make some draw some BRIC anime men. and then I'm gonna draw some BRIC anime fursonas. and then I'm gonna draw some BRIC anime nonbinary comrades. That way everyone gets a little (non exploitative, purely fictional) sex positivity.

ah shit, I forgot that I can't draw. Well. Back to the drawing board.

Isn't there something wrong with it? Like, sure, sex sells, but someone's sat there and drawn their perception of a 'sexy woman', and they've ended up with an utterly unobtainable beauty standard that reinforces normative patriarchal views.

Like, if you're gonna argue that sex sells then it should at least be a diverse group of sexy people. People who are sexy to more groups than those who hold a typical male gaze. If socialism is a movement for everyone then it'd advertisements should be geared towards 'everyone' rather than what seems to be primarily heterosexual men.

I'm cancelling the USSR for all that horny Socialist Realism. (/s)

I feel you on the comments being creepy, though I think a lot of them were particularly irony poisoned awooga jokes. The art just seems to be by some Brazilian woman who likes drawing pretty ladies and mocking America though, so I don't think the art itself is coming from a particularly misogynist place.

I think there's a trend of people hiding behind irony in that regard, but yeah.

The artist does draw more pornographic stuff too, and the main consumer of rule34 type stuff is young men. No, it's not an act of misogyny, but you could say that it reproduces those conditions in catering to that group.

But hey, I can respect the hustle.

That's kinda branching into a whole different dynamic of exploitation though. And as far as I can tell these we're R34 commissions, just horny brained character art.

The horny irony is definitely an issue, but I think for the most part here it's kept kinda under control (at least relatively). None of it is really diverting into misogyny or anything.

I do think we're close to losing
