It's every problem with the existing tunnel multiplied a thousandfold. What happens if a Tesla breaks down halfway through the tunnel? You can't get out of the car in there, too narrow. Is a tow truck going to fit in there? Is it going to be able to drive 12.5 miles in reverse?

What is going to happen when (not if) something catches fire down there?

There is a parallel tunnel for evacuating people, right? Right?

They have trams above ground. Make trams below ground. You can fit 100's of people per go and include the electric infrastructure. How do to soemthing kind of smart in the worst way.

at least the tunnels might be useful for all the climate refugees to escape the 120+ degree heat of Las Vegas in the coming years ... if they aren't full of toxic lithium fire fumes at that point

It’s a fucking shame Vegas of all places has the best water management for cities in the south west. Nevada should be literally getting 0 of the water coming from the Colorado, the only people that should live there are native tribes and worker aristocracy to maintain the infrastructure for native tribes. Mexico should get full control over all the water on the Colorado, the land was literally stolen from them not that long in recent history. Also Hoover dam should be destroyed because dams aren’t good for the environment.

Does Mexico treat their native american population any better?

Also, dams prevent damages from flash floodings.

Definitely better than the United States and Canada, but there are still a lot of problems. It helps that there is a much larger percentage of the population especially including mixed people. Nahuatl has almost two million speakers between all dialects and you can find a lot of rural peoples that speak it nearly exclusively on the east coast. There are a lot of activist movements but most are region-specific and focus on direct grassroots action.

The issue here is not “does Mexico treat its indigenous population better than the United States?” (it does, Mexico is not doing good but they are better than the United States by a wide margin). The issue here is that the United States illegally stole land that rightfully belonged to Mexico and that in turn has caused irreparable harm to the Mexican nation and its people.

All of Turtle Island is stolen land, and while the United States and Mexico are colonial empires which naturally means they are aggressors and bad, the US did something unforgivable to Mexico, they broke the rules that colonial empires were supposed to abide by and stole the land that Mexico had legally settled and occupied for centuries. They deported Mexicans out of their own land, they invaded the Mexican capital, and they turned Mexico into a US puppet state.

The United States has done a national humiliation to Mexico, imagine how much more advanced Mexico would be if they held on to that territory. California alone would have made Mexico the dominant power on the continent, the factors that made Silicon Valley a thing probably would have still occurred and that would have made Mexico a technological power house. And I haven’t even talked about the possibility of Mexico just balkanizing and the US just not interfering, who’s to say that wouldn’t have resulted in the best possible outcome for the creation of communism?

As for Hoover dam. It’s way too big, it was designed for rainfall that will never exist again. So this dam basically acts as a giant barrier that prevents fish from reaching the ocean and wrecked havoc on the environment. I’m not saying dams are all bad but they have downsides and in an ideal world most fresh water would come from renewable sources powered by renewable energy and dams wouldn’t be included in that, hell even nuclear probably wouldn’t be included in that. But for the next 100 years we kind of need dams. But if we had to tear one down, Hoover dam is a great candidate.

Depends wich native americans. The yaquis are doing farly well. Many other native peoples enjoy some autonomy and are no worse than regular mexicans. Then again.... I knew a girl who worked at a goverment hispital in yucatan and the hospital was secretly sterilising mayan women after they gave birth. Mind you this was 15 years ago so they may not be doing that any more.

As for the river. The dryng of the colorado river has been an ecological disaster. People blame the iminent wxtinction kf the vaquita on chinise demand for totoaba bladers. But the reality is that both lost their habitat wichwas the river delta. Many dolfins and similar creatures are adapted to deltas. I beleve there is also a dolphin in the rio de la plata delta. So when the river dries out they die out illegal fishing or no. Illegal fishing is also a problem but the damming of the colorado is the main problem.

But in general im pro dam is built responsibly. Dam power is reliable and efficient.

Anyways, yeah damming a river and drastically cutting the flow cuz you are using all that water to irrigate fucking golf courses is gonna wreck everything, but there can be a mixed thing where the river is damed but keeps the same flow so flash floodings are prevented.

I guess this probably reduces electricity output somehow? And definitely you wont be able to irrigate all those fucking lawns

Probably the other way around since power is proportional to heigth of the water level and flow. The less you use for irrigation the more electricity.

Yes but eventually the damn is always full and you use a constant flow equivalent of the mean yearly flow of the river before daming to produce electricity, right?

Otherwise you wouldn't be able to output the same year-long, right?

Also Hoover dam should be destroyed because dams aren’t good for the environment.

Hydroelectricity is one of the most efficient, reliable, and effective sources of clean power generation that we have available to us. Like it or not, it's better than GHG emissions from other sources of electricity, heavy metal pollution from solar panel production, or the massive amounts of open-pit mines required for large-scale solar/wind power generation.

In fact, by and large the only countries that have largely green electrical grids are the ones that have had large public-sector hydro and nuclear power generation. See for yourself .

      (no more lake mead)

A dream deferred, what with the enormous snowpack from last winter's blizzards.

That's one of the more annoying aspects of Climate Change. Big Complex System is Big and Complex. So you'll have folks come in and predict "Big shortages in 10x Years" but then in Year 5 you get twelve hurricanes in a row that recharge a bunch of the depleted water reserves anticipated to run out. You also get... twelve hurricanes in a row... but this enormous exhaustion of radiation surplus never seems to deter the Climate Denialists.
