I wonder if it is willful collusion among all the big social media sites that they are all simultaneously becoming terrible, or if they are just all reacting to similar stimuli in identical ways.

Either way, I hope they all fucking fail. Fuck SV tech companies. Fuck ad-tech. I truly hope the federated, decentralized alternatives will rise up and not experience a horrible fracturing of ecosystems. And even if they did fracture, it's still 1000x better than surrendering all info and data to a handful of SV shitheads. Those people make me regret my computer science degree. It feels tainted by association.

As an aside remark, China was so right to not allow American social media companies to dominate their online space.

i think the clock has been ticking as the increasing unviability of advertising-based business models has become clearer. if the free market actually worked they'd all give up and fuck off and we could go back to our forums, but this is The Future! they'll wring blood from the stone yet

i work in tech and have a NDA so i can't really get into details but a lot of this is just capitalism doing what Marx said it would do. I would say it's less wifull collaboration than its people stealing each other's terrible ideas but I could be wrong since I'm not at the level where I'd be privy to those conversations.

I wonder if there's anybody left who ever disagrees with him. It's got to be the Emperor's New Clothes every single time.

My wild hunch is that he had a temper tantrum this morning and he said "Let's force everybody to sign in because..." And maybe he continued "I want to stop the scrapping!" Nobody even gently hinted to him that such a move would be beyond moronic. Also - nobody reminded him that he's technically not the CEO anymore.

And now when he sees everything is broken he tweets out that nonsense.

        ---

A less colorful version of my story is he called up the CEO and told her to force everybody to sign in. And then she immediately did as instructed. I actually wonder what she does all day.

Elon also tweeted that the increased twitter data usage was caused by scraping. Bots and programs are using scraping because he restricted the access to the API.

I predicted that this would happen 6 months ago.

Nitter is not working for me either. I've tried multiple instances. The RSS feeds that I've set up using Nitter aren't working either.

Unless this is an unintentional bug, this is a wrap for Nitter and was probably designed to hose Nitter among other things.

Edit: I'm checking the feeds I've set up on my phone and the last tweet is from around 2pm EST, so they basically just hosed Nitter less than an hour ago.

Edit 2: Yewtu.be, a popular Invidious instance, is also down. It's probably a coincidence, but it doesn't bode well either way. Invidious is being threatened too. Mainstream social media are circling the wagons.

Edit 3: If you try to use nitter.cz, you get this message:

Nitter.cz is not working, just like all other Nitter instances. The reason is Twitter blocking all access to it's content without login.

We are sorry, but there is nothing we can do about it right now and we are not sure if the situation will change in the future.

Don't trust corporations, especially those where one egomaniac has all the power. Use open-source and community driven solutions if you can (like Mastodon).

      Sincerely, NoLog.cz collective

Looks like this is the end of the line for Nitter.

        RIP Nitter?

The largest news orgs in the country are saying stuff like "glitch or intentional?" Nobody knows anything. Elon's such an idiotic man-baby.

I think mirror means that you can see the thing from the original source but from a different front end. Kind of like nitter.

Yt shorts is a completely different thing.

Probably had a big brain moment that if they block people without accounts it would drive up user subs, instead of people just not doing that and going on with their day.

Google news search sorted by date: twitter sign in

Big news orgs still don't know the hows and whys. It's funny. A typical comment is...

It was not immediately clear whether the change was an intentional policy update or a glitch, both of which have been common at Twitter since Musk took over the platform.

    ---

    Edit

Some users are caught in a redirect loop.

Twitter now forces you to sign in to view tweets

Change triggers an outage for some

After the change rolled out today, some users who were not logged in reported being caught in a redirect loop, preventing them from accessing the login page. Similar reports on DownDetector confirm that many Twitter users have been logged out and cannot log back in, while others report seeing "This page isn't working" errors.

"Keep getting errors when trying to access on my laptop. Says this page isnt working," one report reads. "Why is twitter not logging in,just keeps on loading ...," another user said.
