To my understanding, Starcraft was supposed to be a 40k game, but Games Workshop pulled the rights for some reason.

I'm hoping I can keep away from the chuds entirely, which may prove difficult. Fortunately the local Warhammer store is run by a pretty chill dude and doesn't tolerate such nonsense.

This is false actually, it was Warcraft that was initially intended as a Warhammer Fantasy game then got swapped into something original. Starcraft started as a space vampire game and then gradually shifted towards what it became. Most dev interviews regarding SC1 also seem to indicate very little intentional connection between it and 40k, (like some dev members have gone on record saying they didn't know about it until years after, although others like Metzen played it at the time) but SC2 had several devs who had previously worked on 40k so at that point the overlap became much stronger. Frankly most of the similarities between SC1 and 40k are very surface level besides, and things which are all very common sci-fi concepts that predated both series.

For non-chuddy Warhammer spaces, Sigmarxism on Lemmygrad exists but is very barren right now. Sigmarxism on reddit is very lib nowadays but used to be pretty good and still has a few members holding out. Beyond those explicit lefty spaces hobby spaces tend to be far better compared to meme or lore ones. If you're willing to look into the other (and best) warhammer setting, Age of Sigmar spaces are usually far better since there's no Imperium and by extension it lacks the fascism it breeds in the fandom. Warhammer Fantasy ones are worse though.

Of course! As someone with... Too much of an addiction to my silly little plastic toy soldiers, I've spent a lot of time in these sorts of spaces and thinking about the settings. And that means spending a lot of time dealing with the community and its particular brand of shit, but also finding (and cultivating) the nicer places.

Always funny when you drop the fact about Women Space marines being a thing in the 80s too (two models named "Gabs" and "Jayne") at least until recently anyhow lol

It's a shame it's fanbase is very toxic.. but glad you've found nicer spaces

The FSM in Rogue Trader thing is a bit more of a complicated situation than that but going into the exact situation is messy and pedantic and you're not exactly wrong anyways

There's a lot of nice warhammer spaces honestly, while the wider fanbase is more toxic it can be very easy to find the nicer spaces if you go looking. Really the one unfortunate thing is that they're usually hobby or game related which makes them less accessible to people who don't hobby. It's specifically the lore and meme sides of the community that tend to be on the worse end, which is unfortunate for lefties trying to get casually invested in the setting since outside of the Sigmarxisms there isn't really a great option, at least that I know of. And even then Reddit Sigmarx is 90% model posts nowadays compared to its heyday which had a lot more memes and effortposting. Honestly I've been meaning to post to Lemmygrad's Sigmarx more to try to get it to grow but I haven't found the time or inspiration for posts there yet.

The sisters of battle part? ^^

Yeah I resigned myself to 3d printing the old stuff and maybe read a book or watch some lore stuff when I felt compelled.
Harder when you dont really have any social circles and such

Well if you ever want a bit of a social circle for it I'm always willing to talk about it!

3D printing is very fun, I need to get a printer for myself sometime instead of just using my school one. If you ever want to talk about hobby stuff and painting the models (or want advice on how to improve) don't hesitate to ask, I'm actually pretty decent if I do say so myself~

Depends on when the next time I get hyperfixated on it lol /hj

We haven't printed much in a while but it can be fun for sure

Yeah that's my understanding they changed some names and tweaked it a little so they didn't get into trouble with GW Check out the 80s stuff to see some cool art and it was a lot different then, bit more rough to where it is now but I dunno has it's charm too.

The chuds are my issue, there's too many right leaning people into it but there is a growing lefty fanbase though I've not found many. I like the lore and stuff and I enjoy some of the games but I don't have any way of playing

Tabletop Simulator is the way most people play Warhammer online, it can be very fun even if it's disconnected from the hobby aspect. Unfortunately I think the TTS devs are transphobes? Or at least one of their community managers was and it caused a big drama two years back. I forget how it ended but might be best to not give them money.

Rogue Trader to 2e is by far the best era of 40k aesthetics and I will die on this hill. I love my stupid little old blobby models they're so cute. And the lore is just at its most interesting during that period too, having just enough to be very compelling but also not yet being refined into edgy grimdark as happened in 3e nor filled with overexplanations as has been happening from 7e to now.

          Tabletop Simulator

Yeah I thought I'd avoid them from some transphobic noise from before

I like Rogue Trader through to 2E for all the art and the feel of it, similar to Judge Dredd and 2000 AD I still like the lore but it's definitely lost a lot of that early charm as time moved on

Yeah I thought I’d avoid them from some transphobic noise from before

Yeah totally fair, I would have too if it weren't for the fact that I bought it years before the situation happened.

Definitely agree on the art too, I fuck so hard with this one of a space marine apothecary that looks like he's making a cup of tea despite the art actually being him collecting geneseed.

I hate when that happens too, I had bought an indie tarot deck and a few years later the guy comes out as a chud, anti left transphobe. Which was surprising because he was gay.

I love the beakies, we 3d printed the original ^^

The rogue trader adjacent stuff has real charm soviet-huff
