This was from the Tim Weiner book Legacy of Ashes, which actually isn't very good.
pointlessly
well actually he was a CIA spy so it was a good shoot
He was probably going to Tibet to help re-enslave the population to the Dali Lama or something.
Shooting a foreign inteligence operative trying to cross the border seems sort of like a very pointed thing to do for a border guard
🎶 I would walk 1,200 miles. And I would walk 1,2— I'm hit. I'm hit... I'm dead.
I had to read Legacy of Ashes for one of my college courses
At the time, it did a decent enough job of convincing me the CIA was bad
But yeah, it's not a very good book in retrospect
Very much a "America is good, but the CIA is bad and makes America worse" type of thing
I think that's called a 'limited hangout'. Admit to things you can't deny but obscure the intentions and severity. I also just don't like his writing style.
I really want to read Aaron Good's American Exception soon.
