Does its existence desensitize pervs and make abuse more likely, or does it provide an outlet such that they'll be less likely to abuse? Are there any research papers on this?

(Goes without saying: fuck pedos)

The million year old dragon with the body of a small child always acts like a small child, too.

My good anarchist answer is that I don't trust the state to regulate art and that the better way to deal with this is through mental healthcare accessibility, providing education on the dangers of sexualizing children, and non-governmental organized efforts to combat the distribution of this kind of material.

But in my heart I'm down to prosecute folks who have loli shit like they own child porn. Just cause it's drawn doesn't mean you're not a pedo. Gross.

So I'm under the impression that pedophiles aren't sexually compulsive. At least, from the literature I've read, it's not accurate to call it an orientation, but pedophiles can't help their sexual attraction. Many are horrified by the fact that they are sexually attracted to children, however, and most do not offend.

I do think it is compassionate to offer a sexual outlet so long as it is healthy. From other shit I've read about sexual offenders, pornography is helpful in this regard. Obviously, for ethical reasons, I think loli/shota is probably the safest and easiest way for there to be a sexual outlet without consequences for innocent people who might otherwise be impacted by it.

That said, the widespread availability, its use by rampant and unrepentant sexual predators, and the creators of the material all leave me with the impression that if it SHOULD exist, it should only exist in the limited capacity as I mentioned for conscious and responsible people with a sexual attraction towards kids.

This is all based on shit I've read up on, so if there's any literature to contradict what I've learned, I would definitely like to read or see it.

I can't wait for the historic court descisions that decide what makes an anime character look too young, and then the inevitable litany of anime characters that skirt the legal line as closely as they can.

Personally I think yes but worrying about this kind of shit when we have no power is pretty pointless. Banning loli should extremely low on our list of priorities.

in a vacuum yes, but as I try to envision it, I can't help but think such a legislation would have absolutely no impact on reality

e: also, at the risk of sounding cliché, outlawing in order to solve problems doesn't sound very radical, does it ?

This comes down to definitions of words.

Are child depictions in anime ok? Yes they absolutely are. There are many depictions of children that are completely harmless, adorable, exceptionally well written and respectful content.

Is sexualisation of children for the audience's thirst for sexualised depictions of children ok? Never. Ever.

There is fundamentally a difference on that second one, there is a difference between depicting the romantic story of two young teenagers as they grow and explore and learn of who they are and what their growing feelings are compared with the sexualised depiction of either a child or a stand-in child as a 500year old vampire. There are two extremely fundamentally different things here, one is in good faith, one is in bad faith. When you actually engage with the content it is extremely easy to see this.

Good depictions of children? Sweetness and Lightning. A heartfelt anime depicting the daily life and struggles of a single dad and his daughter.

Good depictions of teenagers growing and learning their feelings and emotions? Bloom Into You. A lesbian romance about young teenagers discovering and working through their feelings.

Bad depictions? Everything you will ever find in any shounen anime.

As for the OTHER side of this topic -- lolicon. Bad. Always. There's no debate to have about it.

No, not because I think it's good stuff, but because policing porn to make sure it's properly upstanding and moral is some soccer mom Karen Republican shit. Were real children harmed in the making of it? It's CP, ban it. Imaginary children? I don't have to like it but I'm not gonna support the state sticking its nose into people's digital bedrooms.

Chuds and conservatives are the ones constantly invading everyone's lives to make sure they're living "properly" and "decently." I'd rather put faith in people to make their own decisions, even if those decisions are weird.
