Only because in their heart of hearts they know how terrible of an idea another Trump term is, even though it logically follows from the "Trump would be better for the left" argument. And (without going full "not voting Biden is a vote for Trump") they're not voting for Biden and encouraging others not to vote for Biden, which ultimately is good for Trump. They're certainly going beyond just describing the situation.

This isn't very materialist, unless you believe Biden is going to lead some sort of economic recovery. Even from just a tactical/organizational perspective, the ecosystem of lefty politics is infinitely more developed today than it was in 2008, and none of it is caught up in the Biden campaign in the way the left wing of the Democratic party supported Obama (who ran to the left of Hillary and promised major healthcare reform).

I don't know about in Germany, but in the USA a scarily-high percent of Americans would be ok with shooting migrants at the borders. They may not be ok with coming out just saying it, but then again Americans aren't direct about anything.
