Pretty sure it’s because of how badly Pete was polling with black people. Biden at least had that going for him. That and the fact he was Obama’s VP.
Note that they didn't care about black people specifically; it was more than Biden was the only candidate with a real, independent base of support. No other candidate (besides Bernie) had anything resembling a nationwide following. Had someone younger put together a halfway decent campaign they probably would have gotten the nod.
